What does an entry level HVAC technician do?

As an entry-level HVAC technician, you'll typically assist experienced technicians with installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Daily responsibilities often include basic troubleshooting, cleaning and replacing air filters, and learning to use diagnostic tools under supervision. This role provides strong hands-on training and exposure to various equipment, preparing you for certifications and more complex troubleshooting in the future. You'll also collaborate closely with team members, gaining valuable insights into customer service and safety protocols.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an entry level HVAC technician?

To thrive as an Entry Level HVAC Technician, you need a basic understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or completion of a technical training program. Familiarity with tools like refrigerant gauges, multimeters, and EPA Section 608 certification for handling refrigerants is typically required. Both are suitable for those starting in the HVAC industry and involve assisting with installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.

How to get into entry level HVAC as a beginner?

To start as an entry-level HVAC technician, obtain a high school diploma or equivalent, complete a technical training program or apprenticeship, and consider earning certifications such as EPA 608. Gaining hands-on experience through internships or entry-level positions helps build practical skills in system installation, maintenance, and repair.

Why is it so hard to get into entry level HVAC?

Entry level HVAC jobs are competitive because they often require technical skills, such as understanding refrigeration systems and using tools like multimeters, along with relevant certifications like EPA. Many employers prefer candidates with some hands-on experience or apprenticeships, which can make entry more challenging for newcomers without prior training or credentials.
