Compensation Range: $20.90-$31.92

Starting Salary Range: 20.9-26.41

Job Description Summary: Perform entry-level human resources support duties within the Employee Benefits Section (EBS) of the Human Resources Division (HRD) within the Sheriff's Office. HR Assistant is an integral part of the HCSO HR department. This individual will be responsible to accurately interpret and administer HCSO's employee benefit and compensation programs, from retirement plans and health insurance to life insurance and beyond. HR Assistant should have an in-depth knowledge of both benefits and the federal and state laws that govern them. They serve as the go-to person for both new hires and long-standing employees looking to make the most out of what their employer offers.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Enter and/or approve employee benefit transactions within automated systems; assist in auditing information across systems and vendor platforms in order to achieve the desired outcome for the requested action(s).
  • Conduct employee benefits orientations and assist with the annual open enrollment.
  • Respond to questions concerning EBS to include employee benefits transactions, and provide information for the resolution of routine problems.
  • Assist other agency and/or department HRD and EBS staff in initiating, processing, modifying, or correcting information related to employee benefit transactions.
  • Prepare a variety of routine correspondence, notifications, forms, meeting minutes, and related documents in order to communicate information to staff, employees, retirees, and external vendors.
  • Establish and maintain employee benefits files and associated records and systems in compliance with agency, state, and federal laws (e.g., standard operating procedures, HIPAA).
  • Review and audit reports, documents, or forms used by EBS in order to identify and eliminate errors.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Working Conditions
  • Work within an office environment within a law enforcement agency.

  • Work standard business hours.
  • May work non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • In the event of an emergency or disaster, may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by management chain, Division/District Commander, or the Sheriff (or their designee). Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
Minimum Education & Experience
  • A high school diploma or possession of a GED certificate. One year of human resources related experience.
  • OR
  • An associate's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. 6 months of human resources related experience.
  • OR
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
Required Pre-Employment Testing
  • Completion of pre-employment testing.
Additional Job Requirements
  • Attendance at the specified Sheriff's Office work location is required.
  • Depending on assignment, employees may be required to possess a valid Florida Driver License at time of employment. Driving history will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.
  • No visible tattoos on face, head, and neck. Tattoos determined to take away from the professional appearance of the Sheriff's Office must be covered with an appropriate white, black, or neutral covering.
  • No illegal drug sale within lifetime.
  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months. No marijuana use within the last 12 months.
  • No felony convictions within lifetime.
  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence within lifetime.
  • No dishonorable discharge from any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserve Forces.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation including criminal, reference, employment, and neighborhood checks; polygraph; medical evaluation; and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in Workday or similar HRIS platforms to process, audit, and maintain benefits-related data.
  • Experience processing HR documentation such as disability claims, FMLA absences, and other benefitsโ€‘related paperwork.
  • Experience administering, researching, and analyzing benefit and compensation programs including healthcare plans, spending accounts, retirement plans, and lifeโ€‘status changes.
