What careers use chromatography?

Chromatography is used in various careers such as analytical chemists, laboratory technicians, quality control analysts, and research scientists. These roles often involve operating chromatography instruments like high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to analyze chemical compounds in pharmaceuticals, environmental samples, food products, and biological materials.

What is the difference between Entry Level High Performance Liquid Chromatography vs Entry Level Gas Chromatography?

AspectEntry Level High Performance Liquid ChromatographyEntry Level Gas Chromatography
Required CredentialsAssociate degree or equivalent, basic chemistry knowledgeAssociate degree or equivalent, basic chemistry knowledge
Work EnvironmentLaboratories in pharmaceuticals, biotech, or environmental testingLaboratories in environmental, petrochemical, or forensic labs
Common UsageAnalyzing liquids, complex mixtures, biomoleculesAnalyzing gases, volatile compounds, environmental samples

Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work in laboratory settings, but HPLC focuses on liquid sample analysis, while Gas Chromatography specializes in gaseous samples. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus within laboratory sciences.

What jobs can you get with just chemistry?

With a background in chemistry, entry-level jobs include laboratory technician, research assistant, quality control analyst, and manufacturing associate. These roles often require knowledge of laboratory techniques, safety protocols, and familiarity with analytical tools like chromatography equipment.

How to work with HPLC?

An Entry Level High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) technician should start by understanding the instrument's components, such as the pump, injector, column, and detector. Proper sample preparation, method setup, and calibration are essential, along with routine maintenance and troubleshooting skills. Familiarity with safety protocols and data analysis software is also important for effective operation.

Which company HPLC is best?

As an entry level High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) technician, selecting the best HPLC system depends on factors like application needs, budget, and compatibility with existing lab equipment. Leading manufacturers include Agilent Technologies, Waters Corporation, Shimadzu, and Thermo Fisher Scientific, known for their reliability, support, and advanced features. Familiarity with these brands and understanding their specifications can help in choosing suitable equipment for laboratory analysis.
