Job description

Job Description
The Role:
The Software Design Release Engineer (SW DRE) supports the integration, validation, and release of hardware, software, and calibration for electronic control units (ECUs). As the steward of assigned ECUs, this role partners with cross-functional teams and suppliers to coordinate product plans, resolve issues, and support vehicle build and production milestones.
The SW DRE also manages software-related Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS) issues and helps drive timely corrective actions. This role offers the opportunity to build technical engineering, project management, and collaboration skills while contributing to the delivery of high-quality automotive software solutions.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
  • Support the development, validation, and release of embedded controller software and calibrations for development, production, and service applications.

  • Create and maintain product plans, track program milestones, and communicate status to support the on-time delivery of high-quality controller products.

  • Collaborate with suppliers and cross-functional teams to align requirements, review designs, and resolve technical issues.

  • Lead and support product issue investigations through the Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS), including root cause analysis and corrective actions.

  • Create and execute controller validation plans, coordinating testing activities such as bench, integration, safety, cybersecurity, and regulatory testing.

  • Manage software, calibration, and controller part numbers throughout the product lifecycle to support product releases.

  • Support controller and system safety investigations, quality improvement initiatives, and continuous process improvement efforts.

  • Partner with suppliers, manufacturing plants, and engineering teams to support program launches, issue resolution, and successful product delivery.

Required Qualifications:
  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's or Master's degree in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering or Computer Science

  • Must be graduating between Dec 2026 - June 2027
  • Must be able to work in Southeast Michigan
  • Must have a valid US drivers license
  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Formula SAE, Baja SAE, AutoDrive, FIRST Robotics, VEX Robotics, EcoCAR, or other automotive, robotics, or hands-on engineering project experience or clubs

  • Basic knowledge of software verification/validation processes

  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms

  • Experience with product development, validation, or release processes in automotive, aerospace, robotics, or other embedded systems industries.

  • Basic knowledge of embedded control systems, hardware/software integration, or electronic control units (ECUs).

  • Basic knowledge of vehicle communications networks (e.g., CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and diagnostic concepts.

  • Familiarity with engineering processes such as Agile development, functional safety, cybersecurity, or systems engineering.

  • Experience using data analysis, scripting, automation, or Generative AI tools to improve engineering workflows.
  • This position may require legally operating a motor vehicle on an infrequent basis

Work Arrangement:
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI or Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.
