Responsibilities:

  • Perform field explorations, construction observation, geologic reconnaissance, geologic mapping, and field reporting.
  • Field oversight of various drilling techniques including hollow stem auger, mud rotary and sonic drilling. 
  • Manage samples, field equipment and field sites.
  • Conduct limited soil index property laboratory testing and organize laboratory and report data. 
  • Interact and communicate with subcontractors, clients, and staff at all levels. 
  • Assist with business development and marketing activities, including preparation of cost proposals. 
  • Adhere to Shannon & Wilson's Quality Assurance policy. 
  • Follow and promote Shannon & Wilson's Health & Safety and Loss Prevention policies and procedures. 

Requirements

  •  BS Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geological Engineering, Geophysics or a closely related earth science discipline required. MS degree strongly preferred.
  • 0 to 6 years of professional experience as a Geologist. 
  • Strong understanding of fundamental geologic principles, including earth materials, structural geology, stratigraphy, geomorphology, and geologic mapping.
  • Ability to collect, document, and interpret geologic field data accurately and efficiently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports, field notes, and figures.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and other standard office and communication software.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work in varied terrain and weather conditions, including hiking, lifting field equipment, and working on active construction sites.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel locally and out of state as required for project assignments.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and safe field practices.
  • Interest in pursuing professional licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or experience in engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, seismic hazards, geomorphology, neotectonics, hydrogeology, or geologic hazards.
  • Experience with geologic mapping (e.g., field camp), rock and soil logging, drilling observation, field investigations, or construction observation.
  • Familiarity with GIS, Leapfrog and/or CAD, lidar interpretation, geologic modeling, or related geospatial tools.
  • Familiarity with Python or other programming languages. 
  • Geologist-in-Training (GIT), Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or professional licensure. 


Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, an Entry-Level Geologist typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Professional I, II, III, or IV level.


Compensation:

Professional I: $30.00 - $36.50 per hour

Professional II: $81,000 - $87,500 annually

Professional III: $82,500 - $90,000 annually

Professional IV: $85,000 - $105,000 annually
