What does an entry level genetic counselor do?

An entry level genetic counselor works with patients and families to assess the risk of inherited conditions or genetic disorders. They collect family and medical histories, educate clients about genetic testing options, interpret test results, and provide emotional support during the decision-making process. To thrive as an Entry Level Genetic Counselor, you need a solid background in genetics and counseling, typically supported by a master's degree in genetic counseling and certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Familiarity with pedigree analysis software, genetic testing platforms, and electronic health records is commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly set successful counselors apart.
