Job description

This role is hybrid with the expectation of being in the office 1x per week.

Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy.

As a Software Engineer I on the Canada & Emerging Markets team, you'll join a collaborative, supportive engineering team building the features that power restaurants across North America and beyond. You'll work across the full stack - from Android POS devices in the restaurant to backend services in the cloud - gaining broad exposure to how Toast's platform works end to end. Toast is driven by building the restaurant platform that helps restaurants adapt, take control, and get back to what they do best: building the businesses they love.

This is a growth-focused role. You'll be paired with a buddy, mentored by senior engineers, and given progressively challenging work as you ramp. You'll contribute to real features from your first sprint, participate in code reviews, and learn how to ship software that runs in thousands of restaurants. Our team values curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to learn - we'll invest in your development and help you build a strong engineering foundation.

A day in the life (Responsibilities)

  • Leverage cutting edge AI tools (Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) to enhance your development workflow, improve velocity, and help pioneer new approaches to building - contributing to a culture of innovation and productivity across the team.
  • Build and maintain features across the full stack - Android (Kotlin), backend services (Kotlin/Java), and frontend SPAs (React/TypeScript) - under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to backend RESTful services (G2 services) and understand how they integrate with the POS, ToastWeb, and other platform components.
  • Participate in frontend development for internal tools and customer-facing web applications using React and TypeScript.
  • Write automated tests (unit, integration) and maintain high standards for code quality and reliability.
  • Participate in code reviews - both giving and receiving feedback - to grow your skills and improve the codebase.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and QA engineers to deliver features that meet diverse market needs.
  • Complete both the backend (RESTful service) and frontend (SPA) codelabs during onboarding to build foundational knowledge of Toast's systems.
  • Learn Toast's deployment processes, CI/CD pipelines, and feature flag management (LaunchDarkly).
  • Document your work clearly in Jira and Confluence, following team processes and agile practices.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of at least one backend language - Kotlin, Java, Python, or similar object-oriented language.
  • Exposure to frontend web development - HTML, CSS, JavaScript or TypeScript. Familiarity with React is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of RESTful APIs and how frontend and backend systems communicate.
  • Familiarity with relational databases (SQL) or NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB, or similar).
  • Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows (pull requests, code reviews).
  • Strong communication skills - you can explain your thinking clearly and ask good questions.
  • Eagerness to learn, take feedback, and grow in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort working in an agile team with sprint ceremonies, standups, and retrospectives.
Nice-to-Have
  • Experience with Android development (Kotlin, Activities, Fragments).
  • Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks and tooling (React, TypeScript, Webpack/Vite).
  • Exposure to cloud services (AWS), containerization (Docker), or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with message queues or event-driven architectures (Kafka, Pulsar, or similar).
  • Contributions to open-source projects or personal side projects that demonstrate curiosity and initiative.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar).
  • Interest in POS systems, payments, fiscal compliance, or restaurant technology.
