An Entry Level Fire Inspector is responsible for examining buildings and fire protection systems to ensure they comply with fire codes and regulations. They assist in conducting fire safety inspections, identifying hazards, and educating property owners on fire prevention measures. This role typically involves working under the supervision of experienced inspectors while gaining knowledge of fire codes and inspection procedures. Fire Inspectors often collaborate with fire departments and local authorities to enhance public safety.
To thrive as an Entry Level Fire Inspector, you need a solid understanding of fire codes and safety regulations, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent with some coursework in fire science. Familiarity with inspection software, fire detection equipment, and sometimes certification such as Fire Inspector I is commonly required. Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and professionalism help you effectively interact with property owners and work with other safety professionals. These skills are crucial to ensure accurate inspections, clear reporting, and the promotion of public safety within various environments.
Entry level fire inspectors often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex fire codes, ensuring compliance in diverse building types, and handling situations where property owners may be unfamiliar with regulations. Learning to use inspection tools and reporting systems efficiently takes practice, and balancing thoroughness with efficiency can be demanding. New inspectors may also face the challenge of building credibility and rapport with both experienced colleagues and the public. Over time, these experiences help build confidence, expertise, and a foundation for advancement in fire safety careers.

This role focuses on performing on-site life safety and fire protection code compliance assessments in healthcare facilities. You travel to hospitals and other healthcare environments to evaluate existing buildings against applicable life safety and fire protection codes, identify and document deficiencies, and produce accurate, well-organized reports and drawings that support compliance and corrective actions. The position offers a mix of field work and office-based documentation, with opportunities to grow into new construction projects and design review work in a stable, specialized industry.
Responsibilities
This position offers a combination of field and office work. Field work primarily involves travel to healthcare facilities within Indiana and Ohio, with occasional trips to other states for larger or more distant projects. Travel is generally structured so you spend one week on the road followed by one week in the office, with occasional trips of up to two weeks when required. Travel-related costs and mileage are reimbursed at the prevailing government rate, and your vehicle should be able to accommodate a 6-foot ladder used during inspections. In the field, you spend significant time walking and standing within hospital and healthcare environments, accessing above-ceiling spaces, service areas, and other building features, sometimes via ladders or within tight spaces. Weekend work is uncommon and typically limited to situations where Sunday travel is absolutely necessary. Office work takes place in a quiet, relaxed business park setting on the west side of Indianapolis, with a strong focus on fast-paced production, accuracy, and high-quality deliverables. You generally work in pairs on projects to ensure thorough inspections and reliable documentation, and you have access to experienced colleagues who provide guidance and support as you develop expertise in life safety and fire protection. The role is part of a stable niche industry with consistent project funding, and health insurance premiums are fully covered, contributing to an attractive and supportive work environment.
