Entry Level Financial Planning information

What is entry level financial planning?

Entry level financial planning refers to roles where professionals help individuals or businesses manage their finances, such as budgeting, saving, investing, and planning for retirement. People in these positions typically work under the supervision of experienced financial planners and may assist with preparing client reports, researching investment options, and learning the basics of financial advising. These roles are ideal for recent graduates or those new to the finance industry who want to gain experience and work toward certifications like CFP (Certified Financial Planner). Entry level financial planners often develop strong analytical, communication, and client service skills, which are essential for career growth in the financial planning field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level financial planner?

To thrive as an Entry Level Financial Planner, you need a solid understanding of financial principles, analytical skills, and a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with financial planning software, spreadsheets, and pursuing certifications like CFP or Series 7/63 is often expected. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex financial concepts clearly are vital soft skills. These competencies help ensure accurate planning, regulatory compliance, and client trust, which are essential for long-term success in financial services.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level financial planners, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level financial planners often face challenges such as building a client base, gaining trust, and staying updated with evolving financial regulations. It can be intimidating to establish relationships with clients who may prefer more experienced advisors. To overcome these hurdles, new planners can focus on continuous learning, seek mentorship, and leverage networking opportunities within their firm or industry groups. Regularly attending training sessions and collaborating with senior team members can also accelerate skill development and confidence.

Job description

Associate Advisor
Desjardins Financial Security Independent Network - Ottawa, Kingston or London ON | Hybrid | Full-Time, Permanent

About the Role

We're growing - and we're looking for the right person to grow with us.

DFSIN Ottawa is hiring an Associate Advisor to join a high-performing, client-obsessed team that genuinely loves what it does. This isn't an entry-level seat-filler role. We're looking for someone with real experience, sharp instincts, and a genuine passion for helping clients build financial security for themselves and their families.

You'll work closely with a Principal Advisor to deliver exceptional service to an existing client base - preparing for meetings, executing on financial plans, managing portfolios, and building the kind of long-term client relationships that define a great practice.

If you're looking for a place where your work actually matters, where there's room to grow, and where the culture is built around people - this might be exactly what you've been looking for.

What You'll Do

  • Deliver exceptional day-to-day client service and build lasting relationships
  • Prepare for client meetings and execute recommendations from financial plans
  • Conduct research and analysis to support financial planning and investment strategies
  • Collaborate with the Principal Advisor on portfolio monitoring and management
  • Maintain accurate client records using CRM tools
  • Support cash management, budgeting, and forecasting as needed

What You Bring

  • Active Mutual Funds and Life Insurance licences (required)
  • CFP designation or actively working toward it (strong preference)
  • Mid-level experience in financial services - you know your way around a financial plan
  • Strong analytical skills and a sharp eye for detail
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • A client-first mindset, always
  • Driver's licence and access to a vehicle
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary plus bonus and commission potential
  • potential for employee benefits and RRSP matching program
  • Hybrid work arrangement
  • A team that invests in your growth - we want you to build a long-term career here, not just fill a seat
  • A culture that actually walks the talk on work-life balance
