Job description

The role - what you'll do
Barr is seeking a GIS specialist to join our renewable energy team in our Minneapolis, Minnesota, office. In this hybrid role, you will support renewable energy civil design and geotechnical investigation projects (wind, solar, and storage) across North America. You will contribute to a wide range of GIS activities, including spatial data analysis, field investigation support, report figure creation, data management, and quality control.
A successful person in this role is detail-oriented, highly organized, and adaptable, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. They are proactive in identifying GIS best practices and technical solutions and are comfortable working in fast-paced project environments.
Your impact - key responsibilities
  • GIS data analysis and management: perform spatial data analysis using raster and vector datasets; manage, format, and edit datasets to support project needs.
  • Mapping and visualization: create maps and report figures using GIS software to effectively communicate project findings.
  • Field and investigation support: provide GIS support for field investigations, including data collection and processing.
  • Database and application work: complete database entries and queries and support web mapping applications and GIS platforms.
  • Software integration: coordinate GIS data with other applications such as AutoCAD and Google Earth to support multidisciplinary project needs.
  • Quality control and best practices: ensure accuracy and consistency of GIS outputs; identify and communicate best practices and technical solutions to internal and external stakeholders.

About the opportunity
  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.
  • Work environment: some work may occur in outdoor or industrial environments, including locations with rough terrain, steep slopes, dense vegetation, and active construction or industrial sites with moving machinery. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: bachelor's degree in GIS, geology, environmental science, geography, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: experience using Esri ArcGIS Pro for mapping, spatial analysis, and data management.
  • Experience sourcing and working with geospatial data from public sources.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)
  • Master's degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, geology, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of GIS experience, particularly in consulting environments.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online, ArcSDE geodatabases, and scripting (Arcade, Python, JavaScript, etc.).
  • Experience with GPS data collection and mobile applications (Esri Field Maps, Survey123).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, QGIS, Adobe Illustrator, and gINT.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $60,000-$70,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
