How much do entry level embedded software engineer jobs pay per year?
What does a typical day look like for an Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer?
A typical day for an Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer often includes writing and reviewing code, testing software on hardware platforms, and debugging issues alongside more experienced team members. You'll likely participate in daily stand-up meetings, collaborate with hardware engineers, and contribute to ongoing projects through documentation or prototype development. While much of the work involves technical programming, you may also have the opportunity to engage in design discussions and learn from senior engineers. This balance of hands-on coding, testing, and teamwork helps you gain practical experience and develop your engineering skills early in your career.
What is an Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer job?
An Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers and IoT devices. They work with low-level programming languages like C and C++, interact with hardware, and optimize system performance. Responsibilities often include writing firmware, debugging code, and collaborating with hardware engineers. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field and a strong understanding of embedded systems concepts.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer position, and why are they important?
To succeed as an Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer, strong programming skills in C/C++, understanding of microcontrollers, and a relevant engineering degree are fundamental. Familiarity with embedded development environments, version control systems such as Git, and basic debugging tools is highly valued, though certifications like embedded systems courses can be advantageous. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn help candidates integrate smoothly into multidisciplinary teams. These qualifications are essential because they ensure you can develop, test, and troubleshoot reliable embedded software within collaborative engineering environments.

Job Description
Our Mission:
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
The Electrification Solutions New Markets (ESNM) organization within Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) is seeking a Software Quality Assurance Engineer (SQAE) to help advance software built-in quality for GM's next generation of embedded controllers.
ESNM operates like a start-up within VMEC, focused on delivering battery management, inverter, and electric motor solutions for non-automotive and specialty automotive applications. This role will directly support GM's expansion into emerging markets such as autonomous manufacturing, mobile power generation systems, stationary energy storage systems, specialty vehicles, watercraft, and locomotives.
We are looking for a creative, highly motivated, and detail-oriented Software Quality Assurance Engineer who thrives in an agile environment and enjoys solving complex technical challenges. In this role, you will collaborate closely with product owners, developers, and test engineers using agile development methods, including Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), to define, create, automate, and execute software behavior tests that improve product quality from concept through integration.
What You'll Do
Develop and execute software verification strategies for battery management, inverter, and electric motor control systems
Create, maintain, and automate test cases, test scripts, and comprehensive test plans across multiple system levels
Perform integration and verification testing with minimal direction from lead engineers
Analyze software defects, determine root cause, validate fixes, and verify closure
Support design analysis and testing for software and system changes
Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues involving embedded software and related hardware systems
Execute tests in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) environments
Identify software anomalies, missed requirements, and performance issues early in the development cycle
Build robust test automation solutions using tools such as Python and Jenkins
Interpret and apply functional, safety, and compliance requirements to test methods and setups
Partner with cross-functional teams to define effective acceptance criteria and meet program milestones
Serve as a key troubleshooter for product integration issues
Contribute to team knowledge sharing by documenting common issues, edge cases, and lessons learned
Actively participate in the scrum team as a subject matter expert supporting Solution in Context, Solution in Isolation, and System Testing
Support software package evaluations through data reviews, simulation behavior testing, automation development, and test plan execution
What You'll Need (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field
2+ years of embedded software development or software test experience
2+ years of Python scripting experience
Experience reading and debugging source code in C, C++, and/or Python
Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, ideally using dSPACE ControlDesk, and/or software-in-the-loop (SIL) virtual test environments
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Master's degree in Mechatronics, Software, Electrical, or Computer Engineering
Advanced proficiency in Python or similar scripting/programming languages such as C, C++, MATLAB, R, or VBA
Experience with Software Quality Assurance in embedded systems
Knowledge of Agile development and built-in quality practices such as BDD, TDD, or MBSE
Understanding of applied controls theory at the battery, inverter, or electric motor system level
Working knowledge of the embedded software development lifecycle
Experience with test automation, regression testing, and test procedure development
Experience working in an Agile environment
Experience with CppUTest
Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow
