Description DEFINITION Under general supervision, performs a variety of work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of District buildings, facilities, grounds, trees, and water system equipment; cleans and maintains District premises and equipment; uses and operates a variety of hand and power tools and light equipment; and performs related duties as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management staff. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is an entry-level in the Maintenance Technician series responsible for performing maintenance and repair of District facilities and grounds. Incumbent is expected to work independently with minimal supervision; work is routinely checked and/or supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained as they arise.
Examples of Duties EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only) The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to provide a representative list of the various types of work that may be performed. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job class, and incumbents may expect to perform other related similar duties. Some of the duties include, but are not limited to, the following.
Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction tasks for District infrastructure, including well buildings, booster stations, drainage stations, and related facilities. Conducts electrical work in all of District-owned facilities, including system installations, rewiring, troubleshooting, and solar panel installations. Performs welding, fabrication, and structural installations, including custom sign creation for District use.
Conducts preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repair of motors, pumps, valves, and related water production and distribution systems. Performs general facilities and landscape maintenance, including clearing debris, felling trees, repairing fences, and maintaining exterior structures. Conduct minor and preventive maintenance on District vehicles, equipment, and tools, including oil changes and minor repairs.
Assists in construction, installation, and servicing of mechanical and electrical systems for water distribution and production facilities. Operates air compressors, pneumatic/electric tools, and receive training in heavy equipment operation. Reads and interprets manuals, blueprints, and diagrams for repairs and installations.
Cleans and paints District-owned structures, buildings, and piping; haul debris and maintain site cleanliness. Maintains inventory, stock levels, and records for maintenance supplies and equipment. Inspects District facilities and grounds for safety issues and coordinate with vendors for complex repairs.
Drives vehicles to transport materials, tools, and equipment as needed. Utilizes software for recordkeeping, maintenance tracking, and reporting on work orders. Works on a computer; uses software to create and maintain a variety of records and reports; maintains operating logs and records; updates a computer-based work ticket system.
Assists other divisions under the Department of Operations as needed, including leak repairs, well reads, and chlorine deliveries. Performs other related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: General knowledge of principles and practices of maintenance construction and repair, including principles of carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and painting.
The operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light power equipment. Principles and practices of landscaping and tree trimming. Safe work practices and safety equipment.
Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff. The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers, tablets, smartphones, and software programs relevant to work performed.
Ability to: Safely and effectively operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, pneumatic tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work performed. Regularly and predictably attend work. Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
Perform confined space entry with appropriate safety equipment and safe work practices. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines. Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
Accurately read meters, gauges, blueprints, and schematic drawings. Maintain records. Follow and apply written and oral work instructions.
Research repair options and contact manufacturer to determine proper repair procedures for a variety of equipment. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: High school graduation or equivalent; and One (1) to Three (3) years of responsible general construction and maintenance work experience, preferably in a water district or related environment. Licenses and Certifications: Possession of and ability to maintain a California Class C driver's license.
Supplemental Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; possible entry into confined spaces and the use of confined entry equipment, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand, pneumatic and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various District sites; and vision to inspect and operate equipment. Finger dexterity is needed to operate and repair tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 60 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
Employees must wear and use the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Employee works in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust, and air contaminants. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing District policies and procedures.
