What is an entry level electrical engineering technologist?

An entry level electrical engineering technologist is a professional who assists engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment. They typically work under the supervision of senior engineers and may be involved in tasks such as drafting schematics, assembling prototypes, troubleshooting circuits, and conducting quality control tests. These technologists often work in industries like manufacturing, utilities, telecommunications, or construction, applying their knowledge of electrical principles to support engineering projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level electrical engineering technologist?

To thrive as an Entry Level Electrical Engineering Technologist, you need a solid understanding of electrical principles, circuit analysis, and troubleshooting techniques, typically supported by an associate's or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering technology. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, PLC programming, and testing equipment, as well as knowledge of safety standards and possibly an EIT certification, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate project execution, maintaining safety, and collaborating effectively in technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level electrical engineering technologists in their first year?

Entry-level electrical engineering technologists often encounter challenges such as adjusting to fast-paced project timelines, learning to interpret complex technical diagrams, and adapting to industry-specific safety standards. Additionally, they may need to quickly develop proficiency with specialized software and testing equipment while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Overcoming these challenges typically involves seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, actively participating in training sessions, and maintaining a proactive approach to problem-solving.

What is the difference between Entry Level Electrical Engineering Technology vs Entry Level Electrical Engineering?

AspectEntry Level Electrical Engineering TechnologyEntry Level Electrical Engineering
CredentialsAssociate degree or diplomaBachelor's degree in electrical engineering
Work EnvironmentPractical, hands-on roles in labs, manufacturing, or fieldworkTheoretical, design-focused roles in labs, offices, or research
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, utilities, technical servicesDesign firms, consulting, research institutions

Entry Level Electrical Engineering Technology roles focus on practical application and hands-on skills, often requiring an associate degree, while Entry Level Electrical Engineering positions emphasize theoretical knowledge and design, typically requiring a bachelor's degree. Both roles serve different industry needs but share foundational electrical knowledge.

How to get into entry level electrical engineering technology with no experience?

Entry level electrical engineering technology positions often require a relevant associate degree or technical diploma. Gaining hands-on experience through internships, apprenticeships, or certifications in tools like circuit design or PLC programming can improve your chances; demonstrating problem-solving skills and familiarity with industry-standard software also helps. Entry-level roles typically focus on supporting engineering teams and may provide on-the-job training for new hires.

What can I do with an entry level electrical engineering technology degree?

An entry level electrical engineering technology degree prepares individuals for roles such as electrical technician, field service technician, or manufacturing technician. These positions involve installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems, often requiring knowledge of circuit design, testing equipment, and safety standards. Certifications like OSHA or NICET can enhance job prospects in this field.

What do entry level electrical engineering technology do?

Entry-level electrical engineering technologists assist in designing, testing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment. They often work with engineers to develop circuit diagrams, troubleshoot issues, and use tools like oscilloscopes and multimeters in laboratory or field settings.

Job description

About Us

Eden is pioneering sustainable natural resource recovery by using electricity to enhance subsurface permeability. Our Electrical Reservoir Stimulation technology offers a precise, water-efficient alternative to traditional hydraulic fracturing, reducing environmental risks while maximizing resource extraction.

Backed by leading public and private institutions, we have raised ~$24M, including $14M in dilutive capital from industry leaders such as Anglo American and Helmerich & Payne, along with climate-focused investors like the Grantham Foundation. Additionally, we have secured $10M in non-dilutive funding, primarily through four DOE ARPA-E grants that support our R&D in frontier industries.

Headquartered in Somerville, MA, and with an office in Houston, TX, Eden's team of 16 experts specializes in geophysics, geochemistry, high-voltage engineering, and subsurface tool design. We are actively demonstrating our next-generation permeability enhancement technology across diverse geologies worldwide, collaborating with industry leaders in geothermal energy, geologic hydrogen, carbon storage, and mining to redefine resource recovery for a carbon-neutral future.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for field tests, in cooperation with our supportive technical partners.

About the Job

We are seeking a hands-on and driven Electrical Engineering Technician to join our interdisciplinary team in building and deploying electrical reservoir stimulation equipment in both laboratory and field environments.
