Are you ready to launch a career in the skilled trades? The Stationary Engineer Skilled Worker Apprenticeship offers you the opportunity to earn a paycheck while you learn a skilled profession-with hands-on training, classroom instruction, and the support of Johns Hopkins every step of the way.
The Stationary Engineer Skilled Worker, as directed by the MD 1st Grade Engineer on duty or the Operations Supervisor, starts, stops and collects operating data. Adheres to good engineering standards of housekeeping and safety. Work closely with the plant maintenance technicians to identify equipment concerns and address smaller issues involving leaks and lubrication. Employees participating in the Stationary engineer apprenticeship will be given two years to complete step one requirements: passing exam for 5th level and 4th level stationary engineer, completion of 2000 hours in on the job training and completion of 3 credit hours of Boiler Operations and Safety approved by Maryland DLLR
Earn While You Learn
Selected candidates will enroll in a four-year, Maryland state-approved apprenticeship program while working full-time at Johns Hopkins.

  • Hands-on training: Complete 2,000 hours of on-the-job training each year while gaining valuable real-world experience

  • Progressive development: Complete assessments throughout the program to demonstrate your growing knowledge and skills
  • Potential pay increases: You may be eligible for step increases as you successfully complete annual program requirements
  • Career credential: Successfully complete the program and the required State-administered examination to earn a Maryland-approved Apprentice license.

Requirements/Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must pass 10th grade math and reading level assessment.
  • Must be accepted into the State of Maryland Stationary Apprenticeship Program.

Salary Range: Minimum 17.99/hour - Maximum 20.88/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
