Position Overview

As an entry-level Engineering Technician / Designer for theย Electrical Distributionย team at TechServ, you will begin with 2-3 weeks of hands-on job training. You will gain industry certification(s), and become proficient with the client's proprietary CAD software. After completing training, you will work under the general supervision of Project Coordinators to create high-quality designs for newbuilds, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of projects, including: electrical distribution design, transmission, and substation design. You will work as part of a team to support various project phases, including: planning, site evaluation, design analysis, report preparation, construction documentation, and more. Over time, you will work with a diverse portfolio of project types and clients. Travel is required for this position (approximately 20% of the time).

This position serves as an entry point for additional levels of growth throughout the company (e.g., Engineering Technician II, II, IV). The ideal candidate for this role has a strong interest in working with technology and working in a team setting in an open office plan.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

Under general supervision, in this role you will:

  • Use proprietary drafting software (CAD) for client projects, including newbuilds, alterations, redevelopments, etc. and work with Engineers to implement design changes into the system
  • Execute a variety of electrical design assignments using the client's distribution standard drawings and comply with NES procedures
  • Execute changes to designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects
  • Analyze reports, drawings, and tests to plan and design projects
  • Interpret and incorporate design codes and specifications related to design requirements
  • Review design drawings for quality assurance (to ensure projects are within scope, budget, and schedule)
  • Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines
  • Work with leaders and team members to facilitate/support internal change efforts to increase organizational effectiveness
  • Assist with the set-up of projects in applicable project management systems and ensure accurate data entry
  • Travel to regional job sites per client specifications (20%)

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Solid Works - preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office such as Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, including, but not limited to: Project Managers, Engineers, and other Tech/Designers
  • Knowledge of electrical design, calculations, and design systems is a plus
  • Experience working with electrical distribution systems is a plus
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Associate's Degree in Drafting / Design Technology (or similar) is preferred, but not required
  • Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on Excel)
