Job description

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is currently seeking an Entry Level Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in our Norwood or Amesbury, Massachusetts office. The successful candidate must have a strong academic record, solid understanding of geotechnical engineering fundamentals, and a desire to work on a variety of exciting and challenging underground projects both in the office and in the field. Assignments will span a wide variety of infrastructure, real estate/building development, and energy projects. Previous work experience a plus but not required.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Executing subsurface exploration and in-situ testing programs to evaluate soil and bedrock conditions in connection with foundation design & construction projects
  • Performing field construction observation during installation of shallow and deep foundation installation and testing, underpinning and other tasks related to underground construction and ground improvement for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Evaluating field data and performing engineering analyses/calculations, such as slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, lateral pile analyses, and design/evaluation of earth support and underpinning systems (Experience with software such as SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, LPile, Settle3, and Plaxis is a plus)
  • Writing field summary reports, drafts of field and engineering reports, technical specifications, and other technical documents
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with contractors, clients, and team members.
  • Support GZA's "One Company" approach by assisting with tasks outside primary responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform work safely. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies

Qualifications:
  • BS degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Masters degree (or desire to obtain MS while working) is preferred
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) is a plus
  • Effective communication, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical capabilities
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills resulting in exceptional rapport with people
  • Strong academic knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles; including advanced soil mechanics, deep foundations, shallow foundations, slope stability, seismic engineering, retaining wall design, earth retention, settlement of compressible soils, and ground improvement techniques
  • Ability to understand design drawings and relate them to construction activities
  • Ability to work locally and regionally. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license in good standing and have a consistent means of transportation to/from project sites

The base salary for this position may range between $70,000 and $90,000. The actual base salary and total compensation will depend on many factors, including location, candidate experience, education, professional licensure, and other qualifications.
