What is an entry level DevOps engineer?

Entry Level DevOps Engineers are professionals who support the development and operations teams in automating, deploying, and maintaining software applications. They typically assist with building CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, configuring cloud infrastructure, and troubleshooting issues. At this stage, they are expected to have foundational knowledge of programming, system administration, and popular DevOps tools, but are still building experience and expertise. Their role is crucial in ensuring smooth collaboration between development and IT operations, helping organizations deliver software efficiently and reliably.

What does an entry level DevOps engineer do?

The duties of an entry-level DevOps engineer involve taking steps to integrate all aspects of software design, development, and updates into one managed system. DevOps utilizes IT operations to shorten the systems development lifecycle of an application. The responsibilities of an entry-level DevOps engineer often include working as part of a team to merge coding, test products, and plan updates. As in any software role, it is essential to ensure configuration parameters and network requirements are met. The goal of someone in this position is to speed development and updates while limiting bugs and incompatibility issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level DevOps engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level DevOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development, basic scripting (such as Python or Bash), and familiarity with Linux systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with CI/CD tools (like Jenkins or GitLab), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and version control systems (such as Git) is typically required, and certifications like AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and a willingness to learn are important soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to streamline software delivery, ensure reliable system operations, and adapt to the evolving needs of modern IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level DevOps engineers during their first year, and how can they best overcome them?

Entry level DevOps engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced environment, learning a variety of tools (like CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and cloud services), and troubleshooting issues across development and operations. It's common to feel overwhelmed by the breadth of technologies and the need for effective communication between teams. To overcome these challenges, new DevOps engineers should focus on continuous learning, actively seek mentorship from experienced colleagues, and take initiative in documenting processes. Collaborating closely with both developers and system administrators will also help build a holistic understanding of the workflow.

About Proton

Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default

Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we've built the world's largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar-tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives!

We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 500+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here!

The team:

The DevOps team builds, maintains and scales the developer tooling platform and infrastructure that hundreds of engineers at Proton rely on daily, across both on-premises and cloud environments. Security isn't an afterthought - it's a core constraint we design around.

What you will do:

  • Own and scale CI/CD infrastructure handling tens of thousands of jobs daily and growing - that means capacity planning, runner architecture, and making the platform reliable as load patterns shift in ways that don't follow simple rules
  • Deepen our GitOps workflows built on ArgoCD, from day-to-day operational improvements to more structural work on how we manage cluster state across environments
  • Advance our supply chain security posture - we've made deliberate investments in SAST and artifact attestation, and there's meaningful work ahead to see them through
  • Troubleshoot hard infrastructure problems across network, application, and system layers - the kind where the answer isn't obvious and requires pulling on multiple threads at once

What we are looking for:

  • Strong Kubernetes experience, including tuning and troubleshooting on-prem Linux systems under real load
  • Hands-on CI/CD background - GitLab CI specifically is a plus
  • GitOps in practice, ideally with ArgoCD
  • Software development skills in Python, Golang or Rust - enough to build and maintain the tooling around your infrastructure, not just configure it
  • Configuration management experience with Ansible and/or Terraform
  • A security mindset grounded in DevSecOps practices - supply chain security experience is a genuine advantage here
  • The communication skills to work effectively across teams and document your work clearly

Beyond the technical side, we care about how you work with people. The team is small, distributed, and collaborative by habit - we're looking for someone who shares knowledge freely, lifts those around them, and doesn't treat collaboration as an afterthought.

What We Offer:

  • Work that Matters: millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users - not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. The work you do here is real, and the impact is measurable. (read more about our impact here)

  • Salary Range : Paris - Base Annual Gross - 51,000 to 76,000 - Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, skills, and previous experience.
  • Stock Options: at Proton, we all have the opportunity to be owners of the company. From day one, you have a real stake in what we're building. When Proton wins, you win.

  • Technology: you'll get the right hardware and the right software you need to do your best work.

  • Learning & Development: we invest in your growth because sharp people make us better. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career because you'll be thrown into real challenges, with real ownership, from day one.

  • Employee Benefits: your wellbeing isn't an afterthought. We offer strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support so you can bring your best self to work every day

  • In-Person Collaboration: Amazing things happen when passionate, smart, and purposeful people get together in the same room. With offices across Geneva, Zurich, Barcelona, London and more, you'll spend most of your time collaborating face-to-face with people who genuinely care about what they're building

  • Food: Lunch and snacks are on us every day in our offices so you can focus on the work and not on what's for lunch.

  • Transport: getting to the office shouldn't cost you. We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking, whichever works for you.

  • Flexible Working: you own your schedule. Set hours that work for you and your team - because outcomes matter more than when the clock says you started.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

At Proton, we believe diversity drives innovation and strengthens our mission to provide privacy as a default for all. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socio-economic background, feel valued and empowered. We strive to create equal opportunities, promote open dialogue, and support continuous learning to ensure every voice is heard and respected.

If you need any extra support or reasonable adjustments during the hiring process, please let your talent partner know.
