What is an entry level DevOps engineer?

Entry Level DevOps Engineers are professionals who support the development and operations teams in automating, deploying, and maintaining software applications. They typically assist with building CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, configuring cloud infrastructure, and troubleshooting issues. At this stage, they are expected to have foundational knowledge of programming, system administration, and popular DevOps tools, but are still building experience and expertise. Their role is crucial in ensuring smooth collaboration between development and IT operations, helping organizations deliver software efficiently and reliably.

What does an entry level DevOps engineer do?

The duties of an entry-level DevOps engineer involve taking steps to integrate all aspects of software design, development, and updates into one managed system. DevOps utilizes IT operations to shorten the systems development lifecycle of an application. The responsibilities of an entry-level DevOps engineer often include working as part of a team to merge coding, test products, and plan updates. As in any software role, it is essential to ensure configuration parameters and network requirements are met. The goal of someone in this position is to speed development and updates while limiting bugs and incompatibility issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level DevOps engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level DevOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development, basic scripting (such as Python or Bash), and familiarity with Linux systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with CI/CD tools (like Jenkins or GitLab), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and version control systems (such as Git) is typically required, and certifications like AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and a willingness to learn are important soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to streamline software delivery, ensure reliable system operations, and adapt to the evolving needs of modern IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level DevOps engineers during their first year, and how can they best overcome them?

Entry level DevOps engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced environment, learning a variety of tools (like CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and cloud services), and troubleshooting issues across development and operations. It's common to feel overwhelmed by the breadth of technologies and the need for effective communication between teams. To overcome these challenges, new DevOps engineers should focus on continuous learning, actively seek mentorship from experienced colleagues, and take initiative in documenting processes. Collaborating closely with both developers and system administrators will also help build a holistic understanding of the workflow.

Job description

About the Company

Our client was founded to bridge the gap between advisors' trading activities and optimal client outcomes, using derivatives expertise to select structured notes that align with client needs rather than broker incentives. Their mission is to help advisors reduce their clients' risk through structured notes. As a rapidly growing firm, they value innovation, integrity, and the power of informed financial decisions.

The Role

You will work directly with the Product Manager as the critical bridge between what the business needs and what gets built. You will turn business requirements into working software, replace external tools with internally owned solutions, automate manual processes, and maintain the central database that connects every function of the company. Just as important, you will build AI into how the company operates: the agents, bots, and harnesses that let a small team move like a much larger one.

This is a high impact, high autonomy role at a company where your work directly affects the trajectory of the business. Within six months you will own the full pipeline from business request to deployed solution. Within twelve months, the systems and AI workflows you build will be foundational infrastructure for the next growth phase.

What You Will Do

  • Build AI into how the company operates: design agent harnesses, internal agents, and bots that automate real workflows, not just use AI to write code
  • Build and maintain internal systems that replace external SaaS dependencies, so the company owns its core infrastructure
  • Automate manual processes across sales operations, reporting, and client delivery
  • Manage and improve the central database and the integrations that connect it to every tool the company uses
  • Translate business requirements from the sales and operations teams into technical specifications and shipped code
  • Maintain engineering discipline: version control, testing, documentation, and clean deployments

You Are a Great Fit If You

  • Have built AI into company workflows before (agent harnesses, company agents, or bots) and can point to what it changed
  • Have a real point of view on the current AI tooling landscape (gbrain, OpenClaw, Hermes, Buzz) and can tell a strong implementation from an overhyped one
  • Have strong software fundamentals, are fluent in SQL, and understand API integrations
  • Have strong habits around code quality
  • Can communicate with non-technical people about technical tradeoffs, which matters a lot here
  • Thrive in small, fast moving teams where you own your outcomes

Nice to Have, Not Required

  • Financial services experience
  • Knowledge of derivatives, structured notes, or fixed income
  • Background at a finance firm, an AI company, or a startup
  • Degree in Financial Engineering, Operations Engineering, Computer Science with a finance interest, or a related quantitative field
