Entry level developers will continue to play a vital role in software development, as AI tools are designed to assist rather than fully replace human programmers. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coding bootcamp certification. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic knowledge of databases, and exposure to development environments or frameworks are typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn new technologies help set candidates apart. These skills and qualities are essential for contributing effectively to projects, adapting to evolving technical requirements, and collaborating within development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level developers during their first year on the job?

Entry level developers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new codebases, learning company-specific development workflows, and collaborating effectively with more experienced team members. Job description

About the team

Symetra's AI Enablement team is a fast-growing team of builders inside our Data Analytics organization. Our goal is to accelerate AI adoption across the company in two ways: by building shared platforms, tooling, and patterns that let other teams effectively integrate AI into their workflows, and by shipping AI-powered applications for the most important use cases.

We work in small, cross-functional teams, buildwiththe people who use what we make, and move fast. Our first product in production, docstream, is an AI-powered document-processing platform that currently supports several of Symetra's back-end operational processes. We plan to continue to iterate on docstream and to build out other products using the same modular architecture, integrating third-party products where it makes sense.

About the role

As a Software Engineer II, you'll build and ship features across our products on one of these teams. You'll write the services, APIs, and interfaces that make up our applications, take part in code and design reviews, and grow your skills with support from the senior engineers around you.

What you will do

  • Write secure, high-quality, performant code and ship features across our products.
  • Take part in code reviews and design reviews and contribute ideas to our designs.
  • Test your code and help keep our automation and delivery running smoothly.
  • Help investigate and fix production issues.
  • Support interns and entry-level engineers as you grow.

Who You Are

  • An early-career software engineer who ships quality code and is growing toward owning larger pieces of work.
  • Experience building services, APIs, or web applications.
  • Experience with containers (e.g. Docker) and cloud services.
  • Solid problem-solving and communication; excited to work with other engineering teams and business stakeholders who are your internal customers.
  • Use AI coding agents effectively in your day-to-day work, with the judgment to know when to use them and when not to.

Nice to Haves

  • Built LLM-powered applications (prompting, retrieval/RAG, evaluations, agents, MCP).
  • Familiarity with AWS Bedrock or other model-hosting platforms.
  • Infrastructure-as-code with AWS CDK.
  • Frontend development with TypeScript and React.
  • Document-processing, OCR, or data-extraction experience.

Why Work at Symetra

Here's what some of our employees have to say about why they work at Symetra:

"I was referred to Symetra by a family friend who's been with the company for years-and I'm so glad I took their advice. Symetra truly puts its people first. I've always felt supported, not micromanaged, and that trust has helped me grow. I started in an entry-level position and have worked my way up to Unit Manager by continuously learning and expanding my skills. It's a place that believes in its employees and invests in their success." - Morgan D., Sr. Unit Manager

""Symetra will spoil you. There aren't many companies that will put as much effort into you being a success as Symetra. The culture will challenge you but simultaneously put you at ease. Failure is seen as integral to the learning process so there is less reason to be fearful of it." - Kerry S., Sr. Systems Analyst
