Job Description: Description: Summary The Field Engineer 1 directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of field engineering and instrumentation projects within the area of assigned responsibility by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates. As Field Engineer 1, the individual works under the technical and administrative supervision of a Project Manager or their designated representative. He/she may work under the technical supervision of a Senior Project Manager or Principal Engineer. He/she will receive technical guidance on all engineering projects, and supervisory approval on proposed plans for engineering projects. In addition to field engineering and instrumentation duties, the Field Engineer 1 may be required to perform engineering services. These services may include development of soil design parameters for use with geotechnical engineering design project; computing estimates of allowable pile load capacity, allowable soil bearing capacity, and consolidation settlement of foundation; evaluation of laboratory testing, processing of field data and cone penetrometer test data; and summarizing these services in written reports. The employee will be subject to random screening as part of Eustis Engineering’s alcohol and drug abuse testing program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities As an entry level professional, a Field Engineer 1 coordinates site access, performs field testing, installs geotechnical monitoring instrumentation, conducts/assists (in) geotechnical explorations, makes site observations, and summaries their services in engineering reports. The Field Engineer 1 will also assist in downloading and manipulating field measurements, assigning geotechnical soil mechanics laboratory tests, performing geotechnical engineering analyses, and evaluation of laboratory testing data. The Field Engineer’s duties include the following. Others may be assigned.Design, install, and maintain instrumentation systems (total stations, inclinometers, vibrating wire piezometers, borehole extensometers, observation wells, seismographs, etc.); collect and interpret monitoring data; and prepare reports.Drive an F-150 truck (or similar vehicle) pulling a trailer.Support our full instrumentation team and senior professional engineers.Monitor a variety of equipment (optical targets/prisms, vibration monitors, strain gauges, tiltmeters, crack monitors, vibrating wire piezometers, inclinometers, etc.).Maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation equipment.Prepare instrumentation/monitoring proposals and cost estimates based on contract drawings and agency requirements.Prepare monitoring plans for submission to regulatory agencies to monitor construction.Travel to project sites as required including occasional overnight stays.Operate and maintain the company’s cone penetrometer equipment.Reduce and correlate soil test data and CPT data.Operate and maintain the company’s Pile Driving Analyzers.Perform dynamic pile testing. Operate and maintain other field testing equipment (resistivity, CSL, PIT, etc.). Maintain instrumentation equipment calibration records.Support of the firm’s geotechnical instrumentation and remote sensing programs.Obtain, process, correlate, evaluate, and plot geotechnical field instrumentation data.Coordinate project requirements with client representatives.Prepare permit requests for geotechnical field explorations. Coordinate field exploration operations including utility locates (One Call).Prepare field work orders and laboratory assignments in accordance with predetermined project budgets.Perform standard geotechnical engineering analyses and evaluations generally covered in undergraduate curricula.Provide supplemental support for the engineering department as described previously. Develop and manage the company's GIS and geologic mapping resources. Conduct field tests with a degree of accuracy required by governing test standard or oversight agency.Maintain daily log of construction and inspection activities in proper report format when on construction sites.Prepare sketches of construction activities to accompany field reports.Observe work in progress to ensure procedures are followed, and materials used conform to the project’s specifications.On an as needed basis, work as a field Soil Technician or Engineering Technician. On an as needed basis, work as a Laboratory Technician.Knowledge of the Unified Soil Classification System.Knowledge of the AASHTO Soil Classification System.Application of the general safety requirements and other contractual safety requirements to the work being performed. Attend occasional project meetings. Participate in local professional societies (ASCE, ACI, ACEC, etc.). Other duties may be assigned. Field assignments are primarily in the State of Louisiana with some out-of-state assignments. Assignments may require overtime, weekend, and out-of-town work. The Field Engineer 1 must have an appropriate motor vehicle operational license for employment. This individual will also be required to undergo first aid and various levels/types of safety training. Supervision The Field Engineer I works under the technical and administrative supervision of a Project Manager. Project Manager and/or Project Engineer screens assignments and selects techniques and procedures to be used on field testing and instrumentation work. Receives close supervision on geotechnical engineering assignments. The Field Engineer 1 may be required to directly supervise employees performing field testing and instrumentation services and subcontract employees on his/her project. He/she carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
