We are currently seeking a Human Factors & Experimental Design Specialist. This position is a full-time, on-site opportunity located in Arlington, Virginia.
Battelle's Critical Infrastructure group is seeking an entry-level specialist with a background in psychology and strong quantitative skills to support the research, development, test, and evaluation of security systems and technology for the Department of Homeland Security. The selected candidate will be based at Battelle's Crystal City Operations in Arlington, Virginia.
This role requires direct and regular client interaction, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. Work is performed both in the field and at various laboratory environments, supporting senior subject matter experts across a range of human factors and operational assessment activities.
Responsibilities
As a Human Factors & Experimental Design Specialist, the selected individual will support senior statistics and human factors subject matter experts in the research, design, and evaluation of critical security systems for DHS.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Supporting test planning, experimental design, data collection, data reduction and analysis, and technical report writing
  • Applying knowledge of human factors, operations research, physical security applications, and proof-of-concept projects to formal operational assessments
  • Conducting basic statistical analyses including power analyses, confidence intervals, and standard hypothesis testing
  • Utilizing Excel for data analysis and visualization; applying additional tools such as R or other data analysis packages where applicable
  • Supporting communications and briefings with vendors and stakeholders
  • Interacting directly and regularly with clients, preparing clear documentation using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • 0-2 years of technical work experience
  • Familiarity with basic statistical tests, power analyses, and confidence intervals
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and visualization
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact directly and regularly with clients
  • Ability to work both independently as a self-starter and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Travel of at least 25% is required
  • Applicants must be sole U.S. citizens with the eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance and TSA Security Suitability

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science (MS) degree in Psychology from an accredited college or university
  • Current, active DOD Secret Security Clearance
  • Current TSA Security Suitability
  • Experience in the test and evaluation of Transportation Security Equipment (TSE) for the TSA
  • Additional proficiency in R or other statistical data analysis packages

Compensation Data
Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $65,300 - $93,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
