Renewable Energy Specialist I, II, or III (Solar)
Location: Solway and Hoot Lake Solar
Salary grade 10 - 12
Position Summary

At Solway Solar and Hoot Lake Solar, we're passionate about delivering reliable, innovative solar energy solutions that power communities and protect the environment. We're growing-and we're looking for driven, hands-on professionals to join our team as Renewable Energy Specialists (Levels I, II, and III).
As a Renewable Energy Specialist at Solway Solar and Hoot Lake Solar, you will play a critical role in the operation, maintenance, and performance optimization of solar and battery energy systems. You'll ensure our renewable energy assets are running safely, efficiently, and reliably-helping us deliver clean energy to the communities we serve.
In this hands-on role, you'll work both independently and collaboratively to support site operations, troubleshoot equipment, and complete preventative and corrective maintenance. This includes working outdoors in varying weather conditions, maintaining facilities and equipment, and supporting system performance through both routine and emergency response
The Renewable Energy Specialist will report to Supervisor, Renewable Energy.
What You'll Do
  • Perform operation and maintenance of solar and battery energy systems to maximize system performance.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair renewable energy equipment and electrical systems.
  • Execute preventative maintenance strategies aligned with long-term asset management plans.
  • Coordinate with contractors and ensure safe, secure site access as needed.
  • Maintain site infrastructure, including:
    • Balance of plant equipment
    • Access roads, buildings, and grounds
    • Snow removal and vegetation management.
  • Support outage response, restoration efforts, and after-hours coverage when required.
  • Assist with environmental inspections and compliance activities.
  • Work safely in all conditions, including climbing, lifting, and working in outdoor environments.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and support field operations, including line crews when needed.

Level II & III:
  • Demonstrate increasing autonomy in troubleshooting and system optimization.
  • Lead projects or mentor junior team members (Level III).
  • Support execution of advanced maintenance strategies and operational. Improvements.

Qualifications

  • Core Qualifications (All Levels)
  • Strong commitment to safety and risk awareness in all work environments.
  • Ability to obtain a DOT medical card.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to work independently and as part of a team.

Technical Skills (Progressive by Level)
Level I
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, or willingness to learn.
  • Entry-level familiarity (or training potential) in:
  • Electrical troubleshooting.
  • Solar and battery system maintenance.
  • Hand tools and equipment use.
  • Strong desire to build technical expertise in renewable energy.

Level II
  • Proven experience with:
  • Solar and battery system maintenance and repair.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and diagram reading.
  • Heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to identify hazards and mitigate risks independently.
  • Typically requires a two-year degree in renewable energy or related field (or equivalent experience).

Level III
  • Advanced technical proficiency in renewable energy systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and train team members.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic expertise across electrical and mechanical. systems
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience plus applicable education.

    • The expected offer for base compensation for this role is $69,000 - $116,000 annually. The actual compensation within the compensation range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
