Role Description

Arcadis is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic entry-level Transportation Designer - Rail & Transit to join our growing Ontario Rail & Transit team. This is an exciting opportunity for recent graduates and early-career professionals who want to contribute to some of Canada's most transformative transportation projects.

Working alongside experienced engineers, planners, systems specialists, and project managers, you will participate in the planning, design, and delivery of rail and transit infrastructure projects that improve mobility, support sustainable communities, and enhance quality of life across Ontario.

You will gain exposure to a wide range of disciplines including rail systems, track and corridor design, stations and facilities, transit infrastructure, transportation networks, and digital engineering tools. This role offers a structured learning environment where you will develop technical expertise, project delivery skills, and an understanding of how major transit projects are delivered. Arcadis emphasizes integrated transportation solutions, sustainability, innovation, and lifecycle thinking across all stages of project development. 

Role Accountabilities

As a Transportation Designer, you will:

  • Support the planning, design, and delivery of rail and transit infrastructure projects under the guidance of senior professionals.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, models, exhibits, reports, calculations, specifications, quantity estimates, and technical documentation using industry-standard design software.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary project teams and design coordination meetings, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with review of existing conditions, technical standards, design criteria, client requirements, field investigations, site visits, inspections, and data collection activities.
  • Support construction-phase services, design reviews, resolution of technical issues, and development of sustainable and resilient design solutions.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong academic foundation and a demonstrated interest in transportation infrastructure and rail systems, along with an understanding of engineering principles and transportation design practices. Success in this role will require strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, and analytical problem-solving capabilities. Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D, OpenRail, Revit, Bentley applications, GIS, or similar design software is considered an asset. Eligibility to register as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is also considered an asset.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience in transportation, infrastructure, rail, or transit projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Co-op, internship, or research experience related to transportation, transit, rail, municipal infrastructure, or construction projects.
  • Familiarity with Ontario transportation agencies such as Metrolinx, TTC, municipalities, and regional transit authorities.
  • Exposure to BIM, digital engineering, asset management, data analytics tools, sustainable transportation, decarbonization, or future mobility solutions.

The salary range for this position is $63,800-$79,500 per year. The base salary represents Arcadis' hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
