Description and Functions
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety and high correctional standards, as well as a safe, supportive working environment for our employees.
We are now seeking Correctional Officers for the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp in Newcastle, Wyoming. The Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp (WHCC) is a minimum-level correctional facility responsible for housing nearly 300 inmates. This position is essential for maintaining the institution's safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position, receiving the 20-year retirement and state benefits package. This is an entry-level position, and career/growth opportunities are available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.
To maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires the following:
  • Enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts.
  • Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior.
  • Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items.
  • Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations.
  • Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.
  • Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas, monitoring inmate movements.
  • Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.
  • Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required.
  • Assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations.
  • Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the appropriate processing of released inmates.
  • Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.

Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
**REQUIRED: All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and be awarded Correctional Officer Certification by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission within one year of initial appointment.
**Must be at least 18 years of age,
**Must be a U.S. Citizen,
**Must have a valid driver's license
**Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction.
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of security measures, techniques, and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience in a Correctional Setting

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre-employment testing before appointment.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required and the ability to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends.
