ENTRY LEVEL BUS MECHANIC
Division / Department: Operations
Evaluation Instrument: Classified
Pay: Mechanic Salary Schedule (MB)
Pay Type: Salary, Exempt

Reports to: Lead Mechanic
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of any GED Testing Program required. Preferred prior experience repairing gasoline and diesel engines. Must be literate, have mathematical knowledge and have basic computer skills. Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age, possess a valid Georgia CDL with PS endorsement, or be willing to obtain one, and must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record for a minimum of the past three years. Pre-employment and annual physical exam by a licensed doctor of the district's choice is required. No addiction to alcohol or narcotic drugs. Mechanics must submit to random drug testing and mandatory post-accident drug testing. A criminal background check is required.
GOAL:
Ensure the availability of school buses by diagnosing and performing complex repairs to keep buses operating in a safe manner
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Communicates effectively orally and written with the department, vendor, schools, and drivers.
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward the job, fellow workers, school staff, students, and parents.
  • Performs necessary average lifting up to 75 pounds. Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, have finger dexterity, and tolerate hot and cold conditions.
  • Hear conversations in both a quiet and noisy environment.
  • Vision abilities for close, distance, peripheral color, depth perception are necessary as well as the ability to focus.
  • Perform repairs as needed on school system owned vehicles in the shop and on road calls.
  • Attends in-service and/or workshops designed to improve mechanical skills.
  • Prepares for annual inspections of all buses.
  • Repairs gasoline engines, including carburetor and electrical service and electronic ignition.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs diesel engines, making repairs as necessary.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs braking systems, including air, hydraulic, drum, and disk brakes.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs repairing drive trains.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical systems including all safety lights and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs mechanical and safety systems of system vehicles.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs air conditioning systems for buses.
  • Checks fluids, tire pressure and accessory items (batteries, light bulbs, fuses, fans belt, wipers) to identify possible leaks and needed repairs.
  • Possesses knowledge of the fuel injection system in order to make repairs as needed.
  • Understands emission control systems in order to make repairs as needed.
  • Obeys all traffic laws and maintains a satisfactory driving record.
  • Road tests the buses as necessary.
  • Drives a bus route as necessary.
  • Secures parts as necessary showing fiduciary responsibility.
  • Responds to road calls in a timely manner at all times day and night. Determines is disabled vehicles can be repaired in the field or must be towed.
  • Performs tasks as mechanic in the preventive maintenance program.
  • Keeps a clean and organized work environment.
  • Has the ability to work independently.
  • Possesses and demonstrates general technology skills.
  • Practices safe practices and procedures.
  • Organizes documentation (records of repairs, maintenance logs, cost, vehicle warranties) to ensures local, state and federal laws are met.
  • Follows ordering procedures, collects bills of purchased materials and parts and delivers to the proper personnel.
  • Has knowledge to use a variety of tools, equipment in the work area in a safe manner.
  • Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable and punctual manner. Work hours may vary during the year.
  • Presents a professional appearance.
  • Participates in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information and material; adheres to the chain of command.
  • Follows federal and state laws, as well as Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
