The Controls Technician is responsible for assisting with the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, and programming of building automation control systems while providing top-tier customer service for all internal and external customers. This is an entry-level opportunity designed for individuals looking to build a career in building automation and HVAC controls. The successful candidate will receive hands-on training and mentorship to develop the technical skills needed to succeed in the role.

The Controls Technician will gain knowledge and experience related to HVAC systems, control devices, basic computer operations, electronics, mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, direct digital controls, airflow, hydronic systems, IT networking, and building control techniques through structured on-the-job training and field experience.

What you'll do:

  • Assist with job startup, checkout, and troubleshooting for HVAC control systems.
  • Assist with wiring checkout and automation system startups utilizing commissioning tools.
  • Learn to complete adjustments/calibrations and submit commissioning reports on automation systems.
  • Participate in job site meetings and final walkthroughs on assigned jobs and complete job closeout documentation.
  • Assist with repairs to building systems such as air handler controls, room controls, chilled water controls, and issues related to building automation systems.
  • Support project transition from installation to service team.
  • Complete paperwork on time including timesheets, expense reports, posting work orders, on-site documentation, and project status reports.
  • Participate in company-provided training and development opportunities to build technical expertise in building automation and controls systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • High school diploma or state-recognized GED; mechanical, electrical, or related technical degree preferred.
  • Technical aptitude and willingness to learn HVAC controls and building automation systems.
  • Previous experience with HVAC, electrical, mechanical systems, construction, or related technical work preferred.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC systems or mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and apply technical concepts in a hands-on environment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment providing dedicated support to our customers.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & Outlook).
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Demands:

  • The ability to operate standard office equipment including but not limited to laptop, email, smartphone, and tablet.
  • Travel to customer job sites which requires the ability to work in a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing ladders, scaffolds, and high-lift equipment; working in ducts, crawl spaces, roofs, basements, above ceilings, and in outside/inside/heat/cold/day/night conditions.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to maintain a professional appearance.
  • May be required to satisfy requirements imposed by specific projects, customers, or company.
  • Must be able to carry and move equipment and tools weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.
