What Are Entry Level Jobs in Computer Science?

Entry-level computer science jobs include positions that involve programming, software and app development, database administration, and the engineering of software and computer systems. You can also provide technical support, develop specialized programs for mobile phones or embedded computer systems, and work in areas such as cloud computing and machine learning. Entry-level computer science professionals typically operate as part of software development or IT teams, or they report to senior personnel and submit their work for testing and approval. Your duties and responsibilities often focus on developing, testing, or engineering a specific part of a computer-related project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Computer Science professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Computer Science professional, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic software development tools, and potentially certifications like CompTIA IT Fundamentals can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and adapt to new challenges. These skills are crucial for efficiently developing, testing, and maintaining software solutions in a team-oriented and rapidly evolving technical environment.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an entry level computer science professional?

As an entry level computer science professional, you will typically work on tasks such as debugging code, writing simple programs or scripts, assisting with software testing, and supporting senior developers with larger projects. You may also be responsible for maintaining documentation, collaborating with team members during code reviews, and learning new technologies as needed. These experiences help you build a strong foundation and gain practical skills, setting the stage for more complex responsibilities and career advancement in the future.

What are entry level computer science jobs?

Job description

We're redefining how robots are deployed. Our platform enables users to simulate, test, and optimize entire robotic systems in parallel. By removing the barriers that have kept advanced robotics out of reach for all but the largest players, we're ushering in a new era of manufacturing—one where mass reshoring is not only viable, but inevitable.

Reporting to the Validation Lead, the Software Quality Assurance (SQA) Engineer will validate and improve the reliability of our Windows-based connector products. These connectors integrate our motion planning technology with robotic simulation tools and customer environments. This role is ideal for someone early in their career who is excited about automation, enjoys debugging complex systems, and wants to work at the intersection of software and robotics. You’ll contribute to both manual and automated testing, with a strong emphasis on Python-based test development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, execute, and maintain test cases for Windows-based connector applications
  • Develop and extend automated test frameworks using Python
  • Validate integrations with robotic simulation tools and related software environments, such as Siemens Process Simulate, Visual Components and MELSOFT Gemini
  • Investigate test failures, reproduce issues, and collaborate with engineers to resolve defects
  • Contribute to CI pipelines (GitLab CI) to ensure reliable, repeatable test execution
  • Perform exploratory testing on new features and releases
  • Improve test coverage, reliability, and reporting
  • Document test results, bugs, and validation processes

Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Basic programming experience in Python
  • Familiarity with Windows environments (installation, configuration, debugging)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g., pytest, unittest)
  • Exposure to CI/CD systems (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Familiarity with scripting or development in C# or C++
  • Academic, personal, or internship experience in robotics or automation
  • Exposure to robotic simulation or programming tools
  • Experience testing APIs or distributed systems
  • Interest in industrial automation or manufacturing workflows

What Success Looks Like

  • You can independently run and debug test suites for connector releases
  • You contribute meaningful automated tests within your first few months
  • You proactively identify quality gaps and suggest improvements
  • You become comfortable working with both software engineers and simulation environments

Why This Role

  • Work on real-world robotics applications used in manufacturing environments
  • Gain hands-on experience with automation, CI systems, and complex integrations
  • Learn from a highly technical team working on cutting-edge motion planning software
  • Opportunity to grow into QA automation, validation leadership, or software engineering roles

Benefits

  • Competitive Healthcare Coverage
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Commuting Expenses Covered
  • Telecommunications Stipend
  • 401k Match
  • HSA Employer Contribution
