Distinguishing Features of the Class
The Network Engineer is responsible for overseeing and performing the configuring, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting of data networks, personal computers, servers, switches, IP Phones and other communications, to the wide area network. The incumbent works with other MIS employees to solve problems of network operating systems. General supervision is received from a higher-level MIS administrator or a designee, with wide leeway allowed for planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is not a function of this position.
Examples of work (Illustration Only)
Installs, maintains, configures and trouble shoots data networks using network protocols of Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol and Ethernet;
Configures modems, frame relays, multiplexes and routers;
Manages call manager server and other VOIP equipment for adds, moves and changes;
Plans, implements and supports network solutions between multiple platforms;
Ensures system efficiency and integrity;
Plans, coordinates, implements and maintains security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure;
Analyzes applications for client/server architecture and makes recommendations on same;
Sets-up user personal computers for local area network and installs e-mail and other application software;
Sets up for local area network and installs necessary software consistent with other city services;
Diagnoses and resolves local area network and wide area network operating system and hardware and software problems;
Provides network support, ranging from network components to server access;
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotional
Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Senior Operations Communications Coordinator for two years.
Open Competitive
(A) Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or a closely related field and two years of full-time computer network experience;
OR,
(B) Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or a closely related field and four years of full-time computer network experience;
OR,
(C) An equivalent combination of the foregoing within the limits of A and B.
NOTE Computer network experience involves facilitating the communication of one computer to another, i.e., configuration and administration of local area network and wide area network, and using network operating systems.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTFOR BOTH OPEN COMPETITIVE AND PROMOTIONAL,
Possession of a Microsoft Certified Professional certification (MCP), that must be presented at time of appointment.
Additional Information
Thorough knowledge of current technology involved in local and wide area networking, network flowcharting and analysis;
Good knowledge of local and wide area network administration;
Good knowledge of current personal computer operating systems;
Good knowledge of computer server architecture;
Good knowledge of IP Telephony;
