Primary Function

The Structural CAD Technician ll prepares structural design drawings under general supervision, applying a minimum of one year of drafting experience to support Dashiell's structural engineering projects. This position works independently on routine drawings while receiving guidance on more complex assignments. Assignments are lightly supervised and are designed to strengthen the employee's understanding of drafting techniques, corporate/client standards, and procedures. This added knowledge and capabilities will be leveraged in some of the training of new members. This position will be based in our Austin, Texas office located at 11501 Burnet Rd BLDG 906 STE 200 Austin, TX 78758 and will report to Dashiell's Design Supervisor. 

Duties & Responsibilities

Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:

  • Prepare structural drawings including but not limited to foundation plans and details, structural support plans and details, and construction details

  • Draft steel, concrete, and miscellaneous structural details from designer and/or engineer sketches and direction

  • Develop plan views, sections, and elevations of structural components and assemblies

  • Produce equipment support structure drawings and standard structural detail sheets

  • Draft structural notes, general notes, schedules, and drawing lists

  • Apply applicable structural drafting standards and conventions

  • Coordinate with structural designers, engineers, and project teams on drawing requirements

  • Maintain and organize drawing files per company document control procedures

  • Revise existing drawings to incorporate design changes and client comments

  • Perform quality checks on own drawings prior to submission

  • Backcheck peer's CAD drawings for quality control

  • Take personal responsibility for the quality of his/her work

  • Bring potential project related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of team members, especially entry level CAD Technicians

  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested

  • Contribute to the quality and completeness of structural drawing sets

  • Enable efficient construction through precise, well-organized structural documentation

Minimum Qualifications / Experience

  • Associate's degree in CAD Technology, Drafting & Design, or comparable field is required; two years of equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of this educational requirement

  • Minimum 1 year of drafting experience in a structural engineering or industrial environment

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit or Tekla Structures experience a plus

  • Familiarity with structural drawing types (structural plans and details, foundation plans and details, connection details, etc.) preferred

  • Basic knowledge of structural steel, concrete, and miscellaneous metal member types preferred

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to accept directions/corrections when provided with constructive feedback

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods during computer-based work

  • Ability to stand and walk intermittently throughout the workday

  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds

  • Occasional travel to other offices or meeting locations

  • Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically
