Job description

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

The Associate Network Engineer is an entry-level role supporting the design, costing, implementation, documentation, and maintenance of networked computer systems that move large volumes of data between compute, storage, and integrated hardware subsystems. Working under the guidance of senior and mid-level engineers, this position will collaborate with internal engineering teams and external customers to ensure that networks meet performance, security, and reliability requirements, aligns with customer standards, and are properly documented for build, operation, and troubleshooting.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in the design of network architectures and block diagrams for systems that integrate computers, RF components, mechanical components, and other networked devices.
  • Support the design of data transfer paths between network-attached storage (NAS) and other high throughput systems, including selection of appropriate buses, protocols, and interfaces.
  • Help select and specify high speed data transfer cards and related hardware (e.g., 1 GbE, 10 GbE, 40 GbE, 100GbE NICs, switches, and cabling) to meet throughput requirements.
  • Develop and maintain network block diagrams, logical and physical topology diagrams, port maps, and interface documentation using standard diagramming tools.
  • Install, configure, and assist in maintaining rack-mounted servers, switches, and other hardware.
  • Support design and documentation of integrated network systems that can be placed in rugged or specialized enclosures.
  • Assist in evaluating and documenting power draw and basic thermal considerations for network components to support power planning within racks and integrated systems.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot Ethernet-based and fiber-based KVM solutions to support local and remote system administration.
  • Support the installation, configuration, and basic troubleshooting of network switches.
  • Work with software engineering teams to ensure the network infrastructure supports required applications, services, and data flows, including bandwidth and latency needs.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering to ensure that network hardware is properly accommodated in physical designs and integration plans.
  • Learn and apply network security requirements derived from applicable government, industry, or customer standards under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Support tracking and coordination of software, firmware, and licenses associated with network hardware, including updates and renewals.
  • Develop and maintain procedures and documentation for building, configuring, operating, and maintaining networks.
