Job Summary

The Fiber Optic Directional Bore Operator is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground fiber optic conduit and infrastructure. This role is critical to ensuring accurate bore paths, maintaining safe job sites, and completing projects efficiently while meeting company and industry standards.


Essential Tasks

  • Operate directional boring equipment for the installation of underground fiber optic conduit
  • Read and interpret bore plans, utility locates, and job specifications
  • Set up, align, and monitor bore paths to ensure accuracy and avoid existing utilities
  • Coordinate with crew members during drilling, conduit installation, and pullback operations
  • Assist with potholing, trenching, and other excavation activities as needed
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and assist with basic maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety policies, including participation in daily safety meetings and proper use of required PPE
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors to report progress, issues, or safety concerns
  • Maintain a professional and respectful attitude when interacting with coworkers, property owners, and the public


Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating directional boring or HDD equipment is preferred
  • Experience with underground utility or fiber optic installation is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with construction tools, equipment, and job site procedures
  • Understanding of underground utility locating practices
  • Knowledge of fiber optic infrastructure and conduit installation is a plus


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Prior experience in underground utilities, fiber optics, or directional drilling is preferred but not required for motivated candidates with relevant skills


Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other environmental elements
  • Position requires physically demanding labor, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling materials weighing 50 pounds or more
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and working in and around trenches
  • Exposure to construction equipment, noise, vibration, and uneven terrain
  • Extended hours, overtime, overnight, and weekend work may be required based on project schedules
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check


Work Hours

The normal work hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm, with extended hours and required overtime when needed; may also include overnight and weekend work depending on project schedules.


Pay

Pay Range is$16.00-$30.00 per hour.

We have established pay ranges based on experience and skill level. Our available positions range in skill level from Level 1 (entry level) to Level 6 (specialized skill & training).
