What is an entry level CNC programmer?
An Entry Level CNC Programmer is responsible for creating and modifying computer numerical control (CNC) programs used to operate machining equipment. They typically work with CAD/CAM software to generate code that directs machines to cut, drill, or shape materials. This role involves interpreting technical drawings, selecting appropriate tools, and ensuring precision in manufacturing. Entry-level programmers often collaborate with machinists and engineers to optimize production processes. Basic knowledge of CNC operations, G-code, and machining principles is usually required.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of an entry level CNC programmer?
As an Entry Level CNC Programmer, your daily duties usually include interpreting technical drawings, writing or editing CNC programs, and collaborating with machinists to set up and troubleshoot machines. You may also assist with testing and inspecting finished parts to ensure they meet quality standards, and update documentation related to your work. Teamwork is common, as you'll frequently communicate with engineers or production supervisors to resolve issues and optimize manufacturing processes. These tasks provide valuable learning opportunities while supporting the smooth and efficient operation of the machine shop.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the entry level CNC programmer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an Entry Level CNC Programmer, you need a foundational understanding of CNC machining, basic programming skills, and familiarity with reading blueprints or technical drawings, typically supported by a technical diploma or on-the-job training. Competence with CAD/CAM software, G-code, and CNC machine operation is highly valuable, and some positions may prefer candidates with certifications like NIMS. Strong attention to detail, effective problem-solving, and good communication skills help you collaborate with machinists and engineers and ensure quality results. These abilities enable you to efficiently translate design specifications into precise machine instructions, minimize errors, and support team goals in a manufacturing environment.

Job description
Entry-Level CNC Field Service Engineer โ Wisconsin
Latest Technology | Hands-On Training | Excellent Culture | Career Growth
Do you like figuring out how things workโand fixing them when they donโt?
Are you the person who enjoys working on cars, motorcycles, machinery, or other mechanical equipment? Maybe youโve gone to school for automotive, diesel, industrial maintenance, machining, or a similar field. Or perhaps youโve worked as a CNC operator and found yourself more interested in troubleshooting and maintaining the machine than simply operating it.
If that sounds like you, weโd like to talk.
You do not need to be an experienced CNC service technician to apply.
Weโre looking for someone with mechanical aptitude, curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a desire to learn. Weโll help you develop the CNC knowledge and field-service skills.
Build a Career, Not Just Get a JobAs an Entry-Level CNC Field Service Engineer, youโll work alongside experienced senior service engineers throughout Wisconsin, learning how to troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and install some of the most sophisticated CNC machine tools in manufacturing.
Youโll gain hands-on experience in areas such as:
- Mechanical troubleshooting and repair
- CNC machine operation and technology
- Electrical and electronic systems
- Preventive maintenance
- Machine installation and setup
- Diagnosing problems and finding solutions
- Working directly with customers
As your knowledge and experience grow, so will your ability to handle service calls independently.
This is an opportunity to develop a highly specialized technical skill set while building a long-term career in an industry that keeps American manufacturing moving.
We Set You Up for SuccessWe want our service engineers focused on learning, solving problems, and taking care of customersโnot worrying about the tools they need to do their jobs.
We provide:
- Hands-on training alongside experienced senior engineers
- Car allowance
- Company-provided cell phone
- Company-provided laptop
- Fuel expenses covered
- Fast, hassle-free expense reimbursement
- Ongoing technical training and development
- Opportunities to grow as your technical skills develop
Youโll be exposed to different customers, machines, industries, and technical challenges. If sitting behind a desk doing the same thing every day doesnโt appeal to you, this could be a great fit.
What You'll Learn to DoWorking directly with our experienced service engineers, youโll learn to:
- Troubleshoot and repair CNC machinery
- Perform preventive maintenance
- Assist with new machine installations
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and technical problems
- Work directly with customers to resolve equipment issues
- Provide basic customer training and technical support
- Maintain accurate customer and technical documentation
- Take ownership of service cases and projects
- Represent Ellison Technologies professionally and ethically
Weโre less concerned about whether you already have CNC field-service experience and more interested in whether you have the aptitude and desire to learn it.
You may be a great fit if you have experience or education in:
- Automotive or diesel repair
- Industrial maintenance
- Mechatronics
- Manufacturing or machining
- CNC machine operation
- Electrical or mechanical technology
- Military mechanical or technical roles
- Equipment repair
- Or simply significant hands-on mechanical experience working on your own
Maybe youโre the person who has always worked on your own cars. Maybe you enjoy taking things apart to understand how they work. Maybe you're already operating CNC equipment and want to learn how to troubleshoot and repair it.
Those are the kinds of people we want to meet.
What You'll Need- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- A genuine desire to learn CNC technology
- Ability to communicate professionally with customers and coworkers
- Willingness to learn from experienced service engineers
- Ability to travel throughout Wisconsin for training and customer support
During your development, some weekday overnight travel will be necessary so you can work alongside senior service engineers in different parts of the state. This is generally not extended travel for weeks at a time, and weekend travel is not the expectation.
Benefits- Paid time off (PTO)
- Paid holidays
- Sick time
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) retirement plan
- Life insurance
Our mission is simple: Equip manufacturers to compete and winโboth locally and globally.
We believe accomplishing that mission starts with developing our people. Youโll have the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, work with advanced manufacturing technology, and develop skills that can support a long-term technical career.
