Job Description

Position is responsible for daily supervision of assigned Laboratory operations including scheduling of staff and processes, ensuring quality, cost efficiencies and patient satisfaction; performs certain management functions as directed by the Department Manager or Lab Director. Represents the Laboratory in the absence of the Manager; delivers certain, appropriate patient care according to the age of the patient/population served. Position to be used only in a >400 bed hospital or Consolidated Laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in a Biological Science (Equivalency Required for Foreign Education)

Licenses/Certifications: Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT), Certified CLS (ASCP or ASCP-International) or Certified MLS (ASCP or ASCP-International) CM

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Five (5) years of experience in the high complexity clinical laboratory in the assigned/specified area and demonstrated leadership skills
  • Completed competency in assigned area within one (1) year of accepting this position
Principal Accountabilities
  • Oversees, evaluates, performs and documents test results, quality control, maintenance procedures and associated corrective actions according to policy/procedure; evaluates and maintains technical procedures as appropriate to the department/facility; in area assigned, meets and exceeds competency requirements for all workstations; writes procedures; exhibits working knowledge of laboratory information systems.
  • Supports system and hospital customer service initiatives. Recognizes customer satisfaction issues and responds appropriately. Builds and maintains effective relationships with other employees. Develops an effective working relationship with all customers, solicits input, and works with customers to implement mutually satisfying corrective actions.
  • Understands the quality process and is able to utilize quality techniques and principles. Has an in depth knowledge of certain technical processes and is used as a resource for performance improvement. May serve on quality teams and system laboratory service technical teams.
  • Serves as a resource to other staff, having advanced levels of knowledge and experience in certain analytical techniques, processes and aspects of the laboratory information system. Oversees certain laboratory processes.
  • Under the direction of the Departmental Manager or Lab Director, develops and validates certain laboratory tests and assays. Routinely verifies test results, addresses technical problems and acts as a technical resource for other laboratory personnel. Interacts with physicians and other departments relating to technical/process issues. May act as the in-charge person on certain shifts and in the absence of the Manager or Lab Director.
  • Performs duties in a manner to promote quality patient care and customer service/satisfaction, while promoting safety, cost efficiency, and a commitment to the CQI process.
  • May participate in the interview process and may provide input to the Manager regarding employee performance. Acts as an integral part of the orientation training process, verifying new employee competency in certain areas. Trains employees on new procedures and techniques.
  • Understands, communicates and complies with policies, procedures and initiatives of laboratory services, the hospital and system. Understands, communicates and compiles with standards and conditions set forth by various governmental and accrediting agencies including TJC, FDA CAP, AABB, HCFA, OSHA and CLIA. Assists the Manager in implementing and assuring compliance to certain standards and conditions.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermann's service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
