Job description

We are SLR Consulting (US), a 500+ coast-to-coast team of advisory, environmental/engineering, and regulatory professionals. We deliver environmental and sustainability services to our clients through the integration of over 30 advisory, technical environmental, and engineering disciplines to help clients address some of their most complex challenges around sustainability. We are Making Sustainability Happen.

As our new Staff Engineer you will play an important role on a team whose work is essential to achieving this goal.

SLR Consulting is looking for an early-career Staff Engineer supporting the Reno, NV office and the broader team as project work ramps up through 2026. This role is designed for someone in the 0-1 year experience range (including relevant internships) who's ready to build a foundation in civil engineering consulting through a mix of office and field assignments. You will help deliver day-to-day technical work, learn and apply tools like CAD/Civil 3D and other engineering software as needed, and contribute to project tasks under guidance-while developing toward EIT/PE career progression in the mine waste engineering group. Characteristics of a successful candidate are adaptability, an eagerness to learn, the ability to receive constructive criticism, shift between priorities, and collaborate closely with a team of engineers, field staff, and other specialists.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting project engineers with day-to-day civil engineering tasks across a variety of projects related to mine waste engineering, with a focus on learning core workflows and building practical design experience quickly.

  • Preparing and updating drawings and design deliverables under direction, including drafting support in AutoCAD/Civil 3D (as applicable) and organizing associated files and documentation.

  • Performing design calculations related to volumetrics, quantity takeoffs, hydrology and hydraulics for a variety of projects.

  • Assisting with field work as needed including travel to active sites for short assignments, collecting observations and measurements, and bringing findings back to the team for follow-up and documentation or support of other teams field programming.

  • Working with a multidisciplinary team to compile, review, and manage project data (e.g. design criteria, calculations, notes, exhibits, and supporting materials) to help keep deliverables accurate and on schedule.

  • Learning to apply new tools and software as projects require (including Autodesk products, HEC-RAS, Excel and others), with coaching and feedback from experienced staff.

  • Collaborating closely with your assigned lead (and broader team) to take instruction, ask questions, prioritize tasks, and communicate progress as you complete assignments.

    Working @ SLR

With us, there is no doubt you'll grow your subject-matter expertise and industry knowledge. We care about investing in our employees for the long-run, and if you ask our team, they'll tell you that's just one of the many benefits of working here. • Competitive total compensation package including medical, dental, orthodontia, vision, FSA/HSA, generous PTO accrual, 10 paid holidays, 401(k) retirement account with company matching program, company paid life insurance, short & long term disability insurance, and employee assistance program.

    • Full-time, permanent role with opportunities for professional growth and advancement

    • Mentorship and hands-on support from experienced engineers and other professionals as you grow from entry-level work into increasing project responsibility

    • A steep learning curve with real project exposure-mixing office-based design and analysis with opportunities to support field efforts as needed

    • Professional development aligned to your long-term path toward EIT/PE licensure (including encouragement and support as you work toward your EIT/PE)

    • Exposure to industry-standard tools and workflows (e.g., CAD/Civil 3D, hydrology/software tools, and Microsoft Office), with time and guidance to build proficiency

    • A collaborative team environment that values adaptability, clear communication, and being a dependable teammate

    • Diverse project opportunities that allow for development of various skills across multiple disciplines and the opportunity to explore your interests

    Qualifications/Education/Memberships:

    • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or closely related engineering discipline) from an accredited program

    • 0-1 years of relevant experience (internship experience strongly valued)

    • FE exam completed and/or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status preferred; ability and commitment to obtain EIT within 12 months if not already achieved

    • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D preferred

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

    • Willingness to take direction, learn new tools/software as needed, and adapt quickly across different tasks and projects

    • Ability to support both office-based work and short-term field assignments as project needs require

    • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented approach
