Job description

Position Summary

The Estimator I is an entry-level role for a recent construction management, civil engineering, or building science graduate. This position supports the preconstruction team by performing quantity takeoffs, soliciting subcontractor pricing, and assembling estimate components under the direct supervision of senior estimating staff. The focus of this role is learning: how drawings become quantities, how quantities become costs, and how costs become a competitive bid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings and specifications for assigned CSI divisions (typically starting with sitework, concrete, masonry, and finishes)

  • Assist in preparing conceptual, schematic, and hard-bid estimates under direction of an Estimator II/III or Chief Estimator

  • Distribute Invitations to Bid (ITBS) and track subcontractor participation and coverage by trade

  • Log, organize, and level incoming subcontractor and vendor quotes for review by senior staff

  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks; document existing conditions with photos and notes

  • Maintain the estimating file structure, drawing logs, and addenda tracking for assigned pursuits

  • Request and follow up on scope clarifications from subcontractors

  • Assist with historical cost data entry and unit cost database maintenance

  • Support bid-day activities: answering phones, entering late numbers, and updating the bid tab

What You Should Know

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings (architectural, structural, civil, MEP) and specifications organized in CSI MasterFormat

  • Understanding of basic construction means and methods: how a building goes together, sequence of trades, and common assemblies

  • Fundamentals of construction math: areas, volumes, unit conversions, waste factors, and productivity rates

  • Familiarity with the difference between direct costs, general conditions, overhead, and fee

  • Basic understanding of contract delivery methods (hard bid, negotiated, design-build, CM at Risk)

  • Exposure to scheduling concepts (critical path, milestones) even if not building schedules

  • Strong written communication... you will be emailing subcontractors daily

Software and Technical Skills

Required: Microsoft Excel (intermediate: formulas, lookups, pivot tables), Microsoft Outlook, Bluebeam Revu or Adobe Acrobat for drawing review and markups

Strongly preferred: Exposure to at least one on-screen takeoff platform (On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift, Bluebeam quantity tools, STACK, or similar)

Nice to have: Exposure to Procore, Building Connected or SmartBid, RSMeans cost data, Revit or basic BIM literacy, AutoCAD viewing
