Summary
The Department of Theology & Religious Studies at John Carroll University invites applications for the full-time position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Catholic theology or Catholic moral theology. This is a one-year appointment, renewable up to three years, with the first term to begin in August 2027. The area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose work explores the intersection of theology, social ethics, and culture; and is sensitive to the global, ecumenical, and contextually diverse nature of theology today.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching, commitment to high-impact pedagogies, and the ability to offer a wide range of courses in contemporary Catholic theology and/or Catholic moral theology that support JCU's core curriculum, the Theology & Religious Studies major/minor, and master's programs in theological education and pastoral ministry. Since this position provides courses within the interdisciplinary Catholic Studies minor, experience engaging the Catholic Intellectual Tradition more broadly is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching is the primary responsibility of visiting faculty. Visiting faculty teach four sections each semester (Fall/Spring), in some combination of introductory- and upper-level undergraduate core, major/minor, and master's-level courses in Catholic theology and/or Catholic moral theology.
  • In addition to teaching, visiting faculty are expected to be engaged members of the university community and contribute to shared governance via the work of the department, college, and university.
  • Examples of service include: participate in regular meetings of the faculty; engage in academic innovation, curricular revision, and assessment; service on a faculty, department, college, or university committees; advise students or student organizations; and engage in university ministry or other activities related to the mission of the university.
  • Visiting faculty are not required to engage in scholarly activity as part of their standard workload. However, in support of the professional development of visiting faculty, a small, clearly-defined part of their workload may be dedicated to scholarship.

Required Qualifications
  • A Ph.D., or its equivalent, in Catholic theology or Catholic moral theology in hand by August 2027.
  • Demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching Catholic theology or Catholic moral theology at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience engaging the Catholic Intellectual tradition and ability to contribute courses to the Institute of Catholic Studies' minor in Catholic Studies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching a wide range of courses in Catholic theology and/or Catholic moral theology.
  • Experience with high-impact pedagogies such as technology- enhanced learning, service and community-based learning, and undergraduate research.
  • Expertise at the intersection of theology, social ethics, and culture; and sensitivity to the global, ecumenical, and contextually diverse nature of theology today.
  • Demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching Catholic theology or Catholic moral theology at the graduate level.
  • Evidence of scholarship that supports teaching excellence in theology.
