Job description

DIESEL AND CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

An employee in this job is responsible for the performance of highly skilled tasks in the diagnosis and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and construction equipment, such as heavy trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, excavators, pavers, rollers. Work involves analyzing and troubleshooting diesel fuel system problems and repairing or replacing diesel fuel systems and fuel system components. Work may also involve providing guidance to other mechanics and garage support personnel. Work is performed independently and reviewed for quality and efficiency of the repair tasks completed.


ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the laws pertaining to the safe repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used for highway and bridge maintenance and construction.

• Knowledge of the problems caused through use and malfunction in the diesel and gasoline engine fuel systems and the required methods, procedures, and techniques in diagnosis and troubleshooting.

• Knowledge of automotive vehicles, equipment, and parts, and the standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the diesel and automotive mechanic trade.

• Knowledge of troubleshooting and diagnostic practices used in diesel injection pumps and injectors.
