What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Big Cat Keeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Big Cat Keeper, you generally need a background in animal science or zoology, hands-on animal care experience, and knowledge of safety protocols for handling large carnivores. Familiarity with animal husbandry tools, daily care logs, and sometimes certification in wildlife handling or first aid are often required. What are entry level big cat keepers?

Entry level big cat keepers are professionals who work at zoos, wildlife parks, or sanctuaries, assisting with the daily care and management of large feline species such as lions, tigers, leopards, and cheetahs. Their responsibilities typically include feeding the animals, cleaning enclosures, monitoring animal health, and assisting with enrichment activities to promote natural behaviors. While they work under the supervision of more experienced keepers, entry level big cat keepers play a vital role in maintaining the well-being and safety of both the animals and staff. Most positions require at least a high school diploma, with some employers preferring candidates who have relevant volunteer experience or a degree in animal science or a related field.

Gaining hands-on experience and building knowledge about animal behavior are key steps toward becoming a zookeeper.

How much do you get paid to work with big cats?

Entry-level big cat keepers typically earn between $25,000 and $35,000 annually, depending on location and experience. Salaries can increase with additional certifications, specialized skills, and years of experience working in zoological or wildlife facilities.
