What is an entry level behavior tech?

Entry level behavior techs, also known as behavior technicians or Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), are professionals who work under the supervision of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to implement behavior intervention plans for individuals with autism or other developmental disorders. Their responsibilities include collecting data, assisting clients with daily living skills, and using evidence-based techniques such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to promote positive behaviors. Entry level positions typically require a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of specific training, and passing a competency assessment. These roles are essential for supporting clients' progress and helping them achieve their goals in various settings, such as homes, schools, or clinics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level behavior tech?

To excel as an Entry Level Behavior Tech, you generally need a high school diploma or associate's degree, foundational knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and experience working with children or individuals with developmental disabilities. Familiarity with data collection systems, ABA software, and, in some cases, a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification is often required. Patience, strong communication, and the ability to build rapport with clients and families are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for delivering effective interventions, ensuring client progress, and fostering a supportive therapeutic environment.

What kind of support and training can I expect as a new entry level behavior tech?

As a new Entry Level Behavior Tech, you can typically expect to receive comprehensive, hands-on training that covers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles, data collection methods, and behavior intervention strategies. Most organizations provide ongoing supervision from Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), regular feedback sessions, and opportunities for shadowing more experienced technicians. This supportive environment helps you build confidence and ensures you are equipped to handle common challenges, such as managing difficult behaviors or implementing individualized treatment plans. Team collaboration is also emphasized, so you'll often work closely with therapists, families, and other staff to promote the best outcomes for clients.
