Job Description

Position Title: Staff Accountant

Location: Bangor, ME (NO REMOTE)

Reports To: Accounting Manager

Position Overview

The Staff Accountant plays a vital role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of financial records and supporting day-to-day accounting operations for the insurance agency. Reporting directly to the Accounting Manager, this entry-level role is responsible for carrier commission reconciliations, agency/direct bill processing, premium trust account maintenance, bank reconciliations, and supporting month-end close procedures across agency operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reconcile carrier commission statements (direct bill and agency bill) against policies written to ensure accurate revenue tracking and producer commission splits

  • Perform routine bank reconciliations for operating accounts and assist with premium trust account oversight to ensure regulatory compliance and separation of funds

  • Prepare and post standard journal entries, record accounts payable transactions, and assist with vendor payments and cash movements between entities

  • Assist with month-end close procedures, including expense variance analysis, accruals, and deferral tracking for carrier payables and producer payables

  • Support external auditors by gathering documentation for year-end audits or state regulatory filings

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required

  • Experience: 0-2 years of accounting experience (relevant internship experience is considered)

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

    • Workday experience is preferred

    • Prior exposure to or familiarity with insurance Agency Management Systems such as AMS360, Applied Epic, Salesforce, or EZLynx is a strong plus

  • Key Competencies:

    • Solid understanding of basic GAAP principles and foundational accounting practices

    • Foundational knowledge of insurance billing concepts (Direct Bill vs. Agency Bill, carrier commissions, and producer splits) is preferred

    • High attention to detail, organization, and analytical problem-solving skills

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    • Strong commitment to maintaining internal controls, confidentiality, and internal/external customer service

Compensation

The base salary range for this role is $53,000-$59,000. Actual compensation will be based on factors including location, skills, experience, and internal equity. Cross Insurance offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with match, paid time off, and more.
