Job description

General Summary of Position

The Digital Media Program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks a part-time adjunct faculty member to teach DGMD.1210 Introduction to Audio Production during the designated academic semester.

The course introduces students to the principles and practices of audio production for digital media, including studio and field recording, microphone selection and placement, portable recording systems, signal flow, editing, mixing, sound design, and post-production workflows. Instruction may include field sound for documentary, film, interviews, podcasts, and other location-based media production.

The successful candidate will provide hands-on instruction, develop and evaluate student assignments, maintain regular communication with students, and support an inclusive and collaborative learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in audio production, media arts, communications, filmmaking, sound studies, media studies, or a related field, or active progress toward completion of such a degree.
  • Candidates holding a bachelor's degree may be considered with a minimum of three years of significant relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in audio production, field sound recording, sound editing, sound design, digital video or film production, or related media fields.
  • Familiarity with DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other audio recording, editing, mixing, and post-production software.
  • Knowledge of microphones, portable audio recorders, wireless systems, boom operation, monitoring, signal flow, gain staging, synchronization, and location recording practices.
  • Ability to teach audio-production concepts and technical workflows to students with varying levels of experience.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Additional Considerations

  • Prior college-level teaching experience is preferred.
  • Evidence of having previously taught courses in audio production, media production, filmmaking, communications, or a related field.
  • Experience using DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere Pro, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Audacity, or comparable production software.
  • Professional experience with field sound for documentary, narrative film, interviews, journalism, podcasting, live events, or location-based production.
  • Familiarity with lavalier, shotgun, handheld, and studio microphones; field mixers; wireless systems; timecode; audio synchronization; environmental sound; room tone; and production sound documentation.
  • Experience supporting students in hands-on studio, field, laboratory, or production environments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching and working with a diverse student population.
