About the Role

Summary Under general supervision, the Controls Engineer I is responsible for assisting in the design, programming, and commissioning of basic control systems in material handling and automation environments. This entry-level role provides foundational exposure to PLC logic, HMI development, and electrical integration, supporting more senior engineers throughout the lifecycle of automation projects.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.


System Architecture & Standardization 

  • Learn and apply established design standards and templates for material handling automation systems.
  • Under general supervision and guidance, assisting documentation and maintenance of project-specific I/O lists, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
  • Support adherence to internal coding guidelines and hardware configuration standards.

Technical Leadership & Execution 

  • Assist with development and testing of PLC code under guidance.
  • Support HMI screen creation and validation.
  • Participate in panel build reviews and basic troubleshooting.
  • Aid in field commissioning and system start-up activities under supervision.

Team Development & Mentorship 

  • Participate in onboarding activities and training sessions.
  • Seek feedback and support from senior engineers to build core competencies.
  • Follow established peer-review and quality check procedures.

Cross-Functional Collaboration 

  • Work closely with Electrical Engineers to ensure I/O alignment and panel wiring integrity.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with project managers and on-site teams during commissioning.
  • Attend customer meetings and internal design reviews as an observer or note-taker.

Strategic Growth & Innovation 

  • Stay informed on basic PLC and HMI platforms in use (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens).
  • Engage in internal development initiatives such as code library upkeep and system documentation improvements.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to learn and grow technical skills.

Education and/or Experience

  • Exposure toPLC programming tools such asRSLogix, TIA Portal, or TwinCAT.
  • Basic understanding of HMI development environments (Ignition, FactoryTalk View).
  • Familiarity with control panel wiring, I/O devices, and industrial sensors.
