THIS POSTING WILL BE USED TO FILL POSITIONS EITHER AT A UTILITY MAINTENACE I LEVEL OR UTILITY MAINTENANCE TRAINEE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE UTILITY MAINTENANCE TRAINEE POSITION, CLICK HERE TO REVIEW THE JOB DESCRIPTION: UM Trainee Job Description THE STARTING SALARY FOR THE UM TRAINEE POSITION IS $17.90 Performs entry-level work. Work involves utilizing physical labor to assist in water and wastewater repairs, replacement, excavation, meter installation and taps. Operating equipment associated with maintenance and construction of water and sewer main projects
Maintaining and operating the City's wastewater treatment plant system in a safe, effective, and efficient manner, using technical expertise that follows generally accepted practices and procedures. Workers must be able to be scheduled for "on-call" rotation. This position is subject to "DOT random drug testing".
Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Essential Duties & Required Qualifications Required Education and Experience High school diploma or its equivalent. Valid Class "C" Driver's License from TX or any other US state (Approximately 80% driving time in a company vehicle.) Required Certificates and Licenses Must have a TCEQ Class "I" Collection License and/or a TCEQ "D" Water
Must have or must obtain a basic first aid certificate within 9 months of the hire date. Preferred Qualifications One or more years work experience in any aspect of construction/repair, water/wastewater repair, plumbing, apprentice or related experience. Associate's degree from an accredited college or university or technical school in a related field.
Experience working for a government entity such as a City, County, or a State agency. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Possess basic knowledge in the operation and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, heavy (vehicular) construction equipment, pumps and equipment used in and around water and wastewater systems. Possess familiarity with hand and power tools and equipment commonly used in the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, structures and buildings.
Skill and ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Follow detailed verbal and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with other employees and the public in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
Ability to work irregular schedules with overtime, frequent change of tasks. Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and perform complex mathematical calculations.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Compute rate, ratio, and percent and draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply comprehend and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as shift work, on call, or emergency response situations (i.e., early mornings, afternoons, evenings, late-nights shifts, weekends). Workers must be able to follow safety procedures and use safety equipment to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety. Must be able to wear city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment - Steel-toed leather boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection
Knowledge of Methods and techniques of scheduling work assignments; methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation and writing with proper punctuation, spelling and grammar. Physical Demands & Additional Information Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Working Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; extreme cold and extreme heat; dust and fumes. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally loud.
