Benefits Verification Specialist


Reports to: Utilization Review Manager

Job Category: Hourly | Non-Exempt | Full-Time

Starting Salary: $20-$24 per hour

Job Site: Remote (must reside in Colorado)


Job Summary:

The Benefits Verification Specialist is responsible for verifying insurance benefits and eligibility for prospective and current patients. This entry-level role supports the admissions and clinical teams by ensuring accurate benefit information, timely communication, and proper documentation to facilitate access to behavioral health services.


Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Entry-level role; prior healthcare or insurance experience is a plus but not required.
  • Interest in healthcare administration, behavioral health, or revenue cycle operations.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Professional and empathetic communication.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow processes and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn and accept feedback.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Basic knowledge of insurance terminology preferred.
  • Comfortable using computers and learning new systems.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Verify insurance eligibility and behavioral health benefits with commercial and government payors.
  • Document benefit details including coverage, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and authorization requirements.
  • Communicate benefit information clearly to admissions, clinical staff, and patients as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records in the electronic health record or admissions system.
  • Identify coverage limitations and escalate complex benefit issues to leadership.
  • Follow internal workflows and payor-specific guidelines.
  • Support admissions and utilization review teams with benefit-related questions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to intake and insurance verification.
  • Participate in training and ongoing learning related to payors and behavioral health services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Standing, sitting, bending, reaching.
  • Must be able to see, hear, talk, read, write, type.
  • Exposure to clinical and medical environments.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times. 
  • Driving in all weather conditions.
