Sustainable Design Solutions, LLC (SDS) is seeking an Engineer Intern (EI) with 0–3 years of experience to support the planning, analysis, design, and construction of civil infrastructure projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level or early-career engineer interested in developing technical expertise in water, wastewater, stormwater/drainage, roadway, and other municipal infrastructure projects.

The Engineer Intern will work under the direction of licensed Professional Engineers and Project Managers and will receive hands-on experience throughout multiple phases of project delivery, from planning and design through construction.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with civil engineering design and analysis for water, wastewater, stormwater, drainage, roadway, and related infrastructure projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations under the direction of a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Assist with preparation of construction plans, specifications, technical reports, and cost estimates.
  • Develop and revise engineering drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design software.
  • Assist with hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and modeling, as applicable.
  • Review survey data, record drawings, utility information, GIS data, and other existing project information.
  • Assist engineers and project managers with preparation of permit applications and supporting documentation.
  • Participate in field investigations, site visits, and construction observations.
  • Assist with quantity calculations and preparation of opinions of probable construction cost.
  • Support responses to contractor RFIs, submittal reviews, and other construction-phase activities under the direction of senior staff.
  • Perform research related to engineering standards, design criteria, codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare technical exhibits, figures, spreadsheets, calculations, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, surveyors, and other project team members.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation.
  • Participate in internal project and design review meetings.
  • Complete assigned tasks within established project schedules and budgets.
  • Develop technical knowledge and engineering judgment through mentorship and progressively more complex assignments.

Minimum qualifications and expectations include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited program.
  • Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) certification, or ability to obtain certification within an agreed-upon timeframe.
  • 0–3 years of civil engineering experience.
  • Entry-level candidates and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience with or exposure to AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred.
  • Coursework or experience in water resources, hydraulics, hydrology, environmental engineering, transportation, or municipal infrastructure is preferred.
  • Familiarity with GIS, hydraulic/hydrologic modeling, or other engineering software is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively as part of a project team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Professional Development

  • SDS encourages continued professional development and progression toward Professional Engineer licensure. The Engineer Intern will have opportunities to work directly with licensed Professional Engineers, gain experience across multiple phases of project delivery, and progressively assume greater technical and project responsibilities.
