What is an entropy job?

Entropy jobs typically refer to roles that focus on the measurement, analysis, and application of entropy in various fields such as physics, information theory, thermodynamics, and data science. Professionals in these roles might analyze the disorder or randomness within systems, optimize information transfer, or apply entropy-related concepts in encryption and machine learning. These positions are often found in research institutions, tech companies, and academic environments. Depending on the industry, the exact nature of the work can vary from theoretical research to practical implementation in technology and engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entropy specialist?

To thrive as an Entropy Specialist, you need a strong background in thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and applied mathematics, typically supported by an advanced degree in physics, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software, data analysis tools, and laboratory instrumentation is common in this role. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills to convey complex scientific findings. These skills ensure accurate analysis and application of entropy principles in research, engineering, and system optimization.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working as data entropy analysts in data science teams?

Data Entropy Analysts often deal with the challenge of interpreting large and complex datasets to identify meaningful patterns and reduce uncertainty. They must frequently collaborate with data engineers and scientists to ensure data quality and relevance, especially when dealing with noisy or incomplete information. Balancing accuracy with computational efficiency is a key part of the role, as is communicating findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Staying current with evolving statistical methods and tools for entropy measurement is also essential for continued success in this position.

What is the difference between Entropy vs Data Analyst?

AspectEntropyData Analyst
Required CredentialsKnowledge of information theory, statistics, programmingDegree in statistics, mathematics, or related field; proficiency in data tools
Work EnvironmentResearch, data science teams, tech companiesBusiness, finance, healthcare, consulting firms
Industry UsageUsed in data compression, cryptography, machine learningAnalyzing data trends, generating reports, supporting decision-making

Entropy focuses on measuring information content and disorder within data systems, often used in data science and information theory. Data Analysts interpret data to uncover insights and support business strategies. While both work with data, Entropy is more theoretical and technical, whereas Data Analysts focus on practical data interpretation and reporting.

Job description

Superlinear Computing · On-site at our Palo Alto HQ, with occasional travel to our Chicago Quantum Lab (Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park) · Full-time

About Superlinear Computing

Superlinear Computing is a quantum hardware company headquartered in Palo Alto, with a lab at the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park in Chicago. We design, deploy, and operate on-premises superconducting systems, apply machine learning to characterize quantum system behavior, and translate those findings into specialized hardware products.

The Role

You will work with both quantum systems we operate: the superconducting hardware in our Chicago lab, run with full remote management, and the various entropy sources on the bench in our Palo Alto lab. You own calibration and characterization at the physics level, readout, error mechanisms, and the underlying noise

What You’ll Own
  • Physics-level investigation of noise sources across the systems we operate, with statistical treatment rigorous enough to stand behind.
  • Characterization of the entropy sources we are developing.
  • Figures of merit for the ML-driven characterization pipelines our engineering team builds.
What We’re Looking For
  • A Master’s degree (or an equivalent experimental record) in experimental physics, quantum optics, or precision measurement; PhD preferred.
  • A record of serious noise characterization: you have traced noise in a real measurement chain to its physical origins and defended the result statistically in quantum hardware, precision metrology, gravitational-wave detection, or optical systems.
  • Appetite for hard, patient, hands‑on work at a small company: you will sit with stubborn measurements until they are understood, not merely worked around.
Nice to Have
  • Hands‑on superconducting qubit measurement: coherence measurements, dispersive readout, microwave control.
  • Grounding in the noise physics of lasers and optical detection: the fundamental, quantum-origin fluctuation processes and their technical counterparts, and how each is measured and told apart.
  • Dilution refrigerator experience at the operator level; microwave signal-chain fluency (IQ mixing, heterodyne readout, pulse shaping).
  • Familiarity with control stacks (Quantum Machines OPX, Qblox, QICK) and calibration frameworks.
  • Depth in TLS physics, flux noise, readout crosstalk, or amplifier-chain characterization.
  • Experience characterizing or validating entropy sources or randomness generation.
  • Statistics and ML on measurement streams.
  • Willingness to travel to the Chicago lab when the work calls for hands‑on time.
Compensation and Benefits

Base salary: $240,000 – $300,000, depending on experience. Equity in the company

Benefits: Medical, dental, and 401(k).

Superlinear Computing is an equal opportunity employer.
