What is an entropy job?

Entropy jobs typically refer to roles that focus on the measurement, analysis, and application of entropy in various fields such as physics, information theory, thermodynamics, and data science. Professionals in these roles might analyze the disorder or randomness within systems, optimize information transfer, or apply entropy-related concepts in encryption and machine learning. These positions are often found in research institutions, tech companies, and academic environments. Depending on the industry, the exact nature of the work can vary from theoretical research to practical implementation in technology and engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entropy specialist?

To thrive as an Entropy Specialist, you need a strong background in thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and applied mathematics, typically supported by an advanced degree in physics, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software, data analysis tools, and laboratory instrumentation is common in this role. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills to convey complex scientific findings. These skills ensure accurate analysis and application of entropy principles in research, engineering, and system optimization.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working as data entropy analysts in data science teams?

Data Entropy Analysts often deal with the challenge of interpreting large and complex datasets to identify meaningful patterns and reduce uncertainty. They must frequently collaborate with data engineers and scientists to ensure data quality and relevance, especially when dealing with noisy or incomplete information. Balancing accuracy with computational efficiency is a key part of the role, as is communicating findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Staying current with evolving statistical methods and tools for entropy measurement is also essential for continued success in this position.

What is the difference between Entropy vs Data Analyst?

AspectEntropyData Analyst
Required CredentialsKnowledge of information theory, statistics, programmingDegree in statistics, mathematics, or related field; proficiency in data tools
Work EnvironmentResearch, data science teams, tech companiesBusiness, finance, healthcare, consulting firms
Industry UsageUsed in data compression, cryptography, machine learningAnalyzing data trends, generating reports, supporting decision-making

Entropy focuses on measuring information content and disorder within data systems, often used in data science and information theory. Data Analysts interpret data to uncover insights and support business strategies. While both work with data, Entropy is more theoretical and technical, whereas Data Analysts focus on practical data interpretation and reporting.

Job description

Description
Job Title Postdoc / Point Defects and Magnetic Order in High-Entropy Materials
Location Los Alamos, NM, US
Organization Name MPA-MAGLAB/ National High Magnetic Field Laboratory
Minimum Salary
Maximum Salary
What You Will Do
Work at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at LANL (MPA-MAGLAB) to conduct research on high-entropy materials. An emphasis will be on the fundamental science of point defects in fusion-relevant high-entropy
alloys and the nature of magnetic order in disordered systems. The research will focus on the use of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) to extract symmetry-resolved information on point defects and examine the elastic
constant tensor as a function of temperature and magnetic field. RUS will be combined with dilatometry and heat capacity to examine anharmonicity, phase transitions, and magnetoelastic phenomena. Work will involve
collaborations with an interdisciplinary group of experimentalists and theorists spanning physics, chemistry, and materials science.
What You Need
A background in experimental condensed matter or material science is required. Experience with performing measurements in cryogenic/high-magnetic field environments and/or expertise in elastic, thermoelastic, or magnetoelastic phenomena is preferred.
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience with experimental research in condensed matter or material science
  • Ability to work independently, creatively, and in a team environment
  • Must have excellent written and communication skills in English

Desired Qualifications:
Education: A Ph.D. in Physics or Material Science is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee and will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
Note to Applicants:
Notes to Applicants: In addition to applying online, please submit a cover letter addressing how you meet the required and desired skills, a CV including a list of peer-reviewed publications and talks, and the names of three references. It is preferred that the CV
contains the following information: educational background, degree dates, GPA with scale, experience, competitive honors, relevant extracurricular activities, invited presentations, grants, and patents/publications. For further information, please contact Chris Mizzi (mizzi@lanl.gov) and Boris Maiorov (maiorov@lanl.gov).
Due to federal restrictions contained in the current National Defense Authorization Act, citizens of the People's Republic of China-including the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau-as well as citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Russian Federation, who are not Lawful Permanent Residents ("green card" holders) are prohibited from accessing facilities that support the mission, functions, and operations of national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities, which includes Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Where You Will Work
Located in Northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by
ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure,
health, and global security concerns. Our generous benefits package includes:
  • PPO or High Deductible medical insurance with the same large nationwide network
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Free basic life and disability insurance
  • Paid childbirth and parental leave
  • Award-winning 401(k) (6% matching plus 3.5% annually)
  • Learning opportunities and tuition assistance
  • Flexible schedules and time off (PTO and holidays)
  • Onsite gyms and wellness programs
  • Extensive relocation packages (outside a 50 mile radius)

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject
to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of
marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer. Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the
required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented
approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to Policy Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.
