What is enrollment management?

Enrollment management is a strategic approach used by educational institutions to attract, enroll, and retain students. It involves coordinating various functions such as admissions, financial aid, marketing, retention, and student services to meet the institution's enrollment goals. The goal is to ensure the right number and mix of students are enrolled each year while supporting student success and institutional growth. Professionals in this field analyze data, develop recruitment strategies, and collaborate across departments to enhance the student experience and achieve institutional objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in enrollment management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Enrollment Management, you need strong analytical abilities, knowledge of admissions processes, and a background in higher education administration, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, student information systems (SIS), and data analysis tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders help professionals excel in this field. These competencies are crucial for developing effective enrollment strategies, meeting institutional goals, and ensuring a positive student experience.

Enrollment Management professionals often encounter challenges such as fluctuating applicant pools, changing student demographics, and evolving recruitment technologies. Keeping up with these trends requires adaptability and ongoing professional development. Collaboration across departments—such as admissions, financial aid, and marketing—is crucial to align strategies and ensure a seamless experience for prospective students. Regularly analyzing data and adjusting outreach initiatives can help address these issues and achieve enrollment goals.

Mary Baldwin University seeks an innovative, experienced, and strategic enrollment leader to serve as its next Vice President for Enrollment Management (VPEM). This is a prime opportunity to join MBU at a moment of renewed institutional momentum, working alongside new presidential leadership and a dedicated faculty and staff to build a more integrated, data-informed, and student-centered enrollment system.
