How much do enhanced oil recovery jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 22, 2026, the average hourly pay for enhanced oil recovery in the United States is $15.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $17.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is enhanced oil recovery the same as fracking?

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a set of techniques used to increase the amount of oil extracted from a reservoir, often involving methods like thermal, chemical, or gas injection. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a specific EOR method that involves injecting high-pressure fluid to create fractures in rock formations. While fracking is a type of EOR, not all EOR methods involve fracking, and they serve different purposes in oil production.

What is an Enhanced Oil Recovery job?

An Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) job involves the implementation of advanced techniques to extract additional oil from reservoirs after primary and secondary recovery methods have been exhausted. Professionals in this field work with technologies such as gas injection, chemical flooding, and thermal recovery to improve oil production efficiency. Responsibilities may include reservoir analysis, designing recovery strategies, monitoring injection processes, and optimizing production rates. EOR specialists typically collaborate with geologists, engineers, and field operators to maximize extraction while minimizing environmental impact.

How does enhanced oil recovery work?

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) involves techniques used by EOR specialists to increase the amount of crude oil extracted from a reservoir. These methods include injecting substances like water, steam, chemicals, or gases to improve pressure and reduce oil viscosity, making it easier to produce. EOR requires knowledge of reservoir engineering, fluid dynamics, and often involves operating specialized equipment in challenging environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Enhanced Oil Recovery position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Enhanced Oil Recovery, you need a strong background in petroleum engineering, reservoir management, and geosciences, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and practical field experience. Familiarity with simulation software (such as CMG, Eclipse, or Petrel), laboratory analysis, and industry-standard safety certifications is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help professionals work successfully in multidisciplinary teams. These skills are fundamental for designing efficient recovery techniques, ensuring safety, and maximizing hydrocarbon production in complex reservoirs.

What is the highest paid job in the oil field?

In the oil field, the highest paid jobs are typically senior engineering roles such as Petroleum Engineers or Reservoir Engineers, especially those with extensive experience and specialized skills in enhanced oil recovery techniques. These positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and expertise in subsurface modeling, and they can command high salaries due to their technical complexity and impact on production efficiency.

What are the typical career advancement opportunities in Enhanced Oil Recovery roles?

Professionals working in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) often begin in technical or field engineer roles and can progress to senior project management, reservoir engineering leadership, or specialized consultancy positions as they gain experience. Many companies offer structured career development plans, technical training, and opportunities for cross-functional collaboration with geologists, production engineers, and data analysts. Advancement typically involves taking on larger projects, managing teams, and developing expertise in cutting-edge EOR techniques. Demonstrating strong project results and proactively contributing to process improvements can greatly enhance your growth prospects in this field.

What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

In the field of enhanced oil recovery, senior roles such as petroleum engineers, project managers, and executive positions can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and working in high-cost-of-living areas or large companies. These roles often require specialized knowledge of reservoir engineering, project management, and industry certifications. Compensation varies based on company size, location, and individual expertise.
