Job description


Customer Engineering is looking to recruit an industrious individual to join its Engineering team. The incumbent will direct Senior Designer and subordinate titled personnel in the preparation, review, design, and modification of wiring schematics and engineering specifications related to civil, electrical, electronic and mechanical aspects of the equipment or hardware installed on the distribution system. The candidate must be able to render sound business decisions, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines. Must have the ability to supervise technically oriented employees and have a minimum of two years of experience in civil/structural design and calculations and is familiar with electrical distribution system operations.
Must be flexible and handle multiple projects and changing priorities and be able to meet deadlines, exercise independent judgment and render sound business decisions. In addition, the candidate is expected to become an integral part of the emergency response as system emergencies dictate, including but not limited to: summer heat events, overhead events and winter underground events.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
  • Analyze departmental processes for improvements and opportunities.
  • Ensure proper training for new designers and supervisors within the group.
  • Responsible for coordinating all aspect of the vault modernization process.
  • Assist field crew on identifying solutions on installation hardship.
  • Review engineering designs and applications as a technical consultant.
  • Review Space Allocation designs created by consultants and make recommendations based on soil boring and utilizing technical and economic studies to determine the best design features to layout companys major components of the systems and equipment.
  • Assist the Distribution Engineering Department and other areas in finding solutions for technical problems.
  • Participate in meetings with customers, contractors, and internal customers, and attend external conferences when so delegated.
  • Take a leadership role in the departments training activities, including training of new engineering staff (internal and external) as well as other employees within the department.
  • Supervise Designers in the design, reinforcement, and expansion of the electric distribution systems for new business projects.
  • Perform safety talks, On the Job Training (OJT) and ensure the companys safety and health and environmental programs are adhered to by colleagues and subordinates.
  • Provide instruction and guidance in the development of vault drawings and bus designs.
  • Review the progress of various projects to ensure their completion and provide instruction and guidance in the development of vault drawings and bus designs in a timely and professional manner.

Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field and 2 years of experience in engineering design.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical and 4 years of experience in engineering work in the electric distribution system and civil/structural design.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with internal and external customers, support staff and various levels of management, required.
  • Have the ability to supervise technically oriented employees, required.
  • Be able to render sound business decisions, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines, required.
  • Experience managing and overseeing complex projects and assignments, required.
  • Experience in engineer-related sequencing and planning of such projects and specification development, required.
  • Familiar with electrical distribution equipment such as transformers, network protectors, and cabling associated with underground installations, required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, required.

  • Other: P.E. License Preferred
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to travel to company locations and wear the required PPE as needed.
  • Walking, climbing, driving and site visits are required.
